Is there any way of switching into phone use for TMC on a 910 when the TMC receiver is not playing ball (75% of the time) without physically disconnecting the TMC receiver from the TomTom

No this isn't possible but it is a very good idea for those people that have the RDS-TMC and Traffic subscription, it would allow the GPRS cost to be reduced when the RDS were available.
Last time I suggested this I got shot down by people saying it shouldn't be necessary as the RDS should work - hope you have a tin hat on! - Good idea though if thought through fully - Mike

I was afraid that was going to be the answer. Seems such an obvious requirement as you say, and seems so typical of TPTB at TT assuming RDS works. And it's a real pain trying to disconnect the RDS receiver - particularly the way I have had to mount my TT in my car, certainly not something I could do while driving.

Another advantage to being able to switch RDS traffic to GPRS/3G traffic is when your journey is long across country. RDS only does resgional coverage (fairly large regions) and so Leeds to London for example, wouldn't show all traffic on the entire route.
