There have been some quite heated posts recently about TMC reception. There seem to be good and bad experiences of the technology but very little access to any expert knowledge. As the demand for a TMC facility grows, could we ask Pocket GPS World to.........

Invite Trafficmaster and Itis to write up some hints & tips to good reception and what to expect from current technology in the UK.

"Road Test" TMC kit both software and hardware in various parts of the country. I would have thought this could be made available on loan from most of the big players in the market.

Obviously the TMC situation in the UK is very different from the rest of Europe - perhaps we need special treatment?

Anyone agree?

I couldn't agree more! Although the technology is relatively new to the consumer GPS group I would have thought that manufacturers such as Navman, Tomtom and Garmin are working to some rules and regulations regarding the capabilities of their TMC systems. Given that that is the case, it should not be beyond the whit of man to actually test them and find out which system is the best. After all, it's a radio system, one of the most regulated and parameterised technologies in the world!

I think the responsibility as to whether it works or not and how we get the best out of it rests with the manufacturers of the GPS systems rather than either Trafficmaster or ITIS, as it is the manufacturers who use those services and then sell the resulting package to us.

As to the continent, should we be need "special treatment"? Surely this function should be pan European at the very least and ideally pan global.

My trip through France was with TMC reception all the way to the Italian border. Only when I entered Italy, which is know to have marginal reception in the North West, especially in the mountains, did I completely lose the signal. Entering Switzerland on my return trip and away from the mountains everything returned to normal. This is with a standard Navman 530 plus the T1 TMC kit and the aerial slung across the dashboard.

It would be good if we could have a definitive method of testing these TMC systems outside of the "guesswork" that colours so many posts here.

I agree with you wholeheartedly that it would be good to see some comparative data and help from those that know before we all lose faith in the technology.
