I have run four I3's and have had the following experience.

1) My first I3 with maps on card, don't know what F.W. was on it, but upgraded to 3.10 straight away, however it was useless so downgraded to 2.70. Never was the same again, white screen, lagging maps so I took it back to the shop and swapped it for a new unit.

2) Replacement unit running 2.60 (with maps on card), upgraded to 2.70 and then to 3.20.
3.2 worked brilliantly until I loaded POI's, it then totally fell apart. I then went back to 2.7, was still no good, so went futher back to 2.4 and it runs just okay, however still some white screens etc.

3) Unit purchased by my work F.W 3.10 (with maps on card) runs badly, bad screen lag in map mode, however seems acceptable in Nav mode.

4) Unit purchased by my work F.W. 2.7 (maps on internal memory). Unit has had no firmware changes. Operates perfecly, no white screens, no lag etc. etc. This unit operates as I would expect a sat nav to.

I therfore do feel (although I can't prove it) that F.W. updates combined with POI's and the maps on cards appear to cause problems.

I also agree with the 'Tattooing' argument.

It would be interesting if someone could do a fresh install of 3.2 with no POI's and see how their unit operates???

I feel that POI's may be significant in causing the map mode scereen lag, especially in 3D mode.

I have filmware 3.20 loaded, with transflash card, but i have only got speed camera database loaded and the unit runs how its meant to, if not better than old filmware releases. Maybe having TO MANY poi's loaded can glog the screen and cause map lag.

Just a thought...could it be only certain areas of the country have mapping problems. i.e could the Navteq maps be at fault????

The only POIs that show are the Speed Cameras. If earlier firmwares can handle the large number of POIs loaded on my i3 then why not the latest versions?

The maps are not changed or updated with the FW. So again, why can the old FW handle the maps but the new one can't?

Almahadeus, sorry mate you're wrong...i to have mapping on the card and audio version 2.5...and having had problems with v3.20 i went back to v2.7, still retaining audio v2.5.......

So how come loads of people (like me) still have version 2.0 for their audio software?? and why can't we update to 2.5? What is the difference in units containing audio 2.0 & 2.5.

What i want to know is why is so many people desperate to get audio 2.50 on there units and have languages they dont even know? Could someone please tell me if upgrading to 2.50 does more than just give you extra languages.

Below is a copy of an email I sent to Garmin:

I would like to know when you're going to get your act together and finally
sort out the mess with the firmware for the I3, ever since version 2.70 it
has been a complete cock up, what with the screen freezing up, voice prompts in the wrong place and many other problems, some versions of the I3 work OK, some do not, I and many others have emailed Garmin and the situation remains the same, with the experience I have had so far it is unlikely that I and many other I3 users will purchase from Garmin again.

Their answer:

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe

I apologise for the inconvenience that you have been caused

I recommend that you do two things

Firstly please turn the unit off
Hold the 3 buttons on the front together
(the power, the scroll and the arrow)
The unit will then switch on and ask if you really want to erase all data?
You need to select yes
Then I recommend that you manually update the unit
(this is slightly different to web updater)

Please follow the attached instructions

If you have any further questions please let me know.

Rebecca Ford
European Product Support Associate Garmin (Europe) Ltd

Copy of attached instructions:

Manual update

Please go to www.garmin.com
Enter your unit in the search bar on the right hand side
Then select updates and downloads (situated about 5 sentences down)
Accept the above terms
Download the latest software to your pc
Send to your unit
Make sure the unit is turned on and is connected to the pc.

I despair; they obviously haven't listened to a word we have said to them

Only had my i3 for a week.
Immediatly updated to 3.10 and put on POI and speed camera with POI loader. A bit disapointed with the map redrawing speed but it seemed to do the job. and it only froze once in normal map view in the week.

Updated to 3.20 yesterday and today the 3d screen froze on 2 separate trips. The distance count down was still working so reception must be ok. I reset the i3 by powering off and back on.

I will try removing all POI except speed cameras, but should I go back to 2.7 ?

Cheers

i cudnt hack the freezin screens of 3.20... neither the white screens or the lag... i had to go back to my fav firmware... 2.70... and to be honest..

2.70 ROCKS

it works perfectly, it dusnt freeeze, it redraes quicker, i dont get lag or anything like that..

as a wise man sed...if it aint broke...dont change it...

i think 2.70 is still miles ahead of 3.20, the differences in speed in calculation i find is minimal, so i havent got an urge to go back2 3.20 til another update..

Tried 3.20 last night again and the same thing. Lag in Map mode, white screen and finally a lock up.

Loaded 2.70 this moring and a 10 minutes trip round the block shows how much better 2.7 is than any other FW release since. No lag at all......

Still no response from Garmin..... Crying or Very sad

Paying attention to this thread, I downgraded to 2.7, but have lost all my favourites, and I had quite a few. Crying or Very sad

So I do not do it again, is there a way to save the favourites, if I decide to upgrade in the future?

TIA

easygps (http://www.easygps.com), will solve all you favourite losing problems - and if you're lucky, clear up that reoccurring rash that's been blighting you... ;-)
