How is traffic data accessed by the user with a Nuvi 310D?

I presume the TMC channel is constantly broadcasting a stream of traffic incident data. I guess the actual nature of the data would be interesting to know more about, but perhaps that's one for later!

What I'm interested to know is...

1) Can I scroll around on the screen to look for trouble on a route I'm thinking of myself?

2) Does the unit present quantitative data - eg. "Congestion at M25 J3; anticipated delay 15 mins" or does it just say "hang a left here, matey"?

3) Why can one not access traffic data while sitting in the driveway? (I am told this is the case)

Yes.

Yes, if you click on the traffic icon from the main menu screen, there is an option for a Map to show the traffic around you (this might need a software update compared to the version in the Halfords demo units). If there is traffic on your planned route, you will also get a warning icon on the main navigation screen, which will then just list the traffic that applies to your route, with the ability to avoid each.

Somewhere in the middle - it will say things like "Stationary traffic for 2 miles" and also show the start and end point - eg from J10 to J9 on the M40. It will also grade the delay (Green - minor, Yellow - Moderate, Red - Bad). It won't normally avoid Green delays.

You can - you've been told wrong...
You can't access traffic whilst in Halfords - this is for a number reasons - firstly, they don't plug in the traffic module, also the signal isn't good inside their store, and finally to activate the lifetime subscription Garmin say you need both a decent GPS signal and a decent radio signal, which Halfords staff think you won't get inside (and they might be right).
However, take the same unit outside and sit stationary in your car and (IF you are in a good radio signal area) you will get traffic pretty much instantaneously.
