Newbie trying to upgrade a Tomtom!

Hi all,

my neighbours given me his TOMTOM and asked if i can upgrade the software? Now i have no idea how to do this but i do know about PCs, is this software free? Does it depend on the type of TomTom? How do i upgrade it?!

Any help would be great!

Please look at the underside of the device and then report back what TomTom it is.

ok not sure exactly what youre after but heres what i can see:

FCC ID - S4LGO500
IC: 5767A-GO500

GO 500
TOMTOM - (4D00.500)

OK, so it is a GO 500. You can download the latest software for that from the TomTom website. You may have to install the TomTom HOME software first.

So if i wanted to update the UK maps i use this? Does it cost anything?

Your initial question was about software. Software updates are free.

Map updates are not free.

Ahh right sorry my mistake, so what benefits do i get if i update the software? Where do i get the maps from and how much are they?
