Actually, I don't really need an excuse as no one keeps track of my gadgets except me so who's to know when I have upgraded :-)

What's important is to give others the impression that senility is yet to come by carrying a massively loaded PPC containing all the answers ;-)

I notice that SmartST 2005 + UK map has reduced in price to £49 from £69. Perhaps the new version is really on its way?

Ah ha! That's interesting, a definite maybe! Actually, I thought the last time I checked there (month ago?) it was indicated as being out of stock...

FYI, Sent a letter to Navman customer support recently complaining about the lack of upgrade, and wass assured that the 2006 upgrade would be available for the icn 520 in early December.

Hope this helps. :D

Thanks for that!

They give a very inconsistent impression as far as their customers are concerned, as I have noted elsewhere not far from here. I've given up with them and early next year I shall buy the cleverest phone on the market with a GPS antenna included and, I think, Tomtom 6 installed :-)

From what I have seen the PPC customers have been left dead in the water.
The SPIN does not look much different to the previous versions to me. IMHO There have been few real improvements to the PPC software for years.

Once again we do seem to be sitting around awaiting Navman to release their updates for PPC. It seems like these upgrades have been coming forever.

I fired off an email to the Australian Navman Store on 22nd Nov regarding the delayed and delayed again update release and got the following reply on Thursday 23rd Nov.

"Thank you for your enquiry. The Smart ST 2006 upgrade is expected to be released within the next four weeks. We apologise for the delay and any inconvenience caused."

Luckily I am not a betting men, other wise I would be looking for a "bookie" to get some long odds on the above happening.

Best Regards,
Denis

As I had a few moments to spare over the weekend ( a very rare commodity for me) I browsed thru a TomTom forum and read with interest the anger from many in regards to the slowness of TomTom getting their expected map release to the market. It was supposed to be released in September and they are still waiting. Sounds very Familiar

While the forum had overtones as with Navman's delay in getting their release out I began to wonder if possibly there is a hidden agenda in what we see as continued delays in software/maps releases.

Could it be that because the market for GPS navigation is so broad and price driven then the companies are playing a cat & mouse game in watching to see who puts out what updates, at what price. eg If TomTom releases its latest maps at one price and then Navman totally under-cuts that price for similar maps etc, then it would force sales perhaps in the direction of the cheaper manufacturer.

Any thoughts on this matter ?

Best Regards,
Denis

Been looking forward myself for the Smart 2006 software upgrade for my ICN650 which would include the full postcode and the new features. I never upgraded to the Smart 2005 still on V3. I made some phone calls to NAVMAN UK and sent some emails to confirm and its seems that the Smart 2006 will not be available for the PPC or the ICN 600 series.

The email replys I got are as follows:

Thank you for your enquiry, but unfortunately there will only be updated maps available from January 2007 and you can purchase these from www.navmanstores.com or telephone 01293 780980.

Regarding your enquiry unfortunately there will not be updated software for Pocket PC's and the iCN 600 series due to the fact that the hardware on these devices does not support the new features that the market is demanding.

Is it true that the harware will not support this? or am I being told incorrectly about the software?

Any help appreciated.

Many Thanks

Peter

Back in October 2006 Navman UK, in response to an enquiry I made asking when the UK maps and software would be updated for the Pocket PC, I received a reply stating :

Quote:
The newest maps will be from 2006, they are available at the end of the year, the ones you are currently using are from early 2005.

.... So I rang them yesterday and was told in no uncertain terms that the above is WRONG, and that there are NO plans for any upgrades for the Pocket PC, either maps or software, now or in the future. :x

For less than £70 I have just ordered Tom Tom Navigator 6 with UK maps, and if you shop around you can pick up a brand new HP Ipaq 6915 for £300 delivered - and that's exactly what I have done - Bye Bye Navman Sad

( Ipaq 5550 / Navman GPS 3450 sleeve, plus extras appearing soon on an E-Bay auction near you Rolling Eyes )

Ditto, ditto!

For me it will be TomTom 6 too but I'm still thinking about which PDA it will be - my faithful iPaq 3970 has just packed up. I was even considering an Eten X500 or an HTC P3300 but rebooting a phone every now and then does seem a bit over the top. Basic mobile phones take up such little room in the pocket and there'd still be room for a PDA.

Whatever I get I'd like the GPS antenna built in as sleeves, jackets and Bluetooth thingies are a pain I'd prefer to live without. Let us know which one you do go for and why, maybe? Ta!

I went for the Ipaq 6915 as it has an integrated GPS receiver, so there is no need for an external antennae.

It will also operate as quad band mobile phone and has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Infra Red.

The other reason was the current bargain price - not sure if one is allowed to advertise here but if you do a search on www.pricerunner.co.uk you will see the cheapest price is currently £315 delivered ! ( £368.07 with delivery direct from HP ! )

You can review the Ipaq 6915 at Hp's web site here : http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en/ho/WF05a/21675-21679-21679-21679-297609-12343242.html[/url]

Duh!! Yes, of course, I was looking at that one months ago and then crossed it off the list because I think I prefer the more oblong screen and I'm so used to Block Recognition that the keyboard wouldn't get a lot of use. You'd be happy with the square-ish screen? Maybe this is a non-issue but I got so used to using applications with 240x320 aspect, including SmartST!

Thanks for the purchase details :-)

"Squarish" maybe - but - on my H5550 I find that using the on screen keyboard is a real pain as it takes up too much of the screen and is a bit fiddly to use. On the 6915 with separate keyboard that isn't an issue.

I'll let you know how I get on when it arrives Smile
