Using Kane Car Pilot Lux with iPAQ 3970 (Bluetooth)

With a series of European maps loaded on to a 512MB SD card I experienced many problems during a 2500 mile tour of Europe. Mainly loss of satellites when driving into and switching to a new map area. Prior to commencing the European tour I tested system extensively without any loss of satellites. However, the UK maps were on the (supplied with system) 128MB CF card.

I am in touch with Kane Tech Support but am getting nowhere. They suggest I buy a 512MB CF card (throw away £200 worth of SD card???). Also suggest fault must be with the iPAQ.

Has anyone else had similar problems?

Phantom, using a 512mb CF card won't cause lack of satellite signal, nor will changing maps. The signal will already be there and the data sent from the GPS Receiver to the program, all the program then has to do is map the co-ordinate (Lat/Long) to the Lat/Long on the map. All of which should take microseconds.

Although I haven't used Kane, it does use Destinator software/maps which I have used (Kane offer additional add-ons and customisation).

I can't see how changing maps would cause sat problems, the one thing you could have is a defragmented CF card, and this could cause slowness in reading from the card, but that's all.

First a small point, you refer to the CF card. My problem is not with the CF card but is when the SD card is invoked.

I am not of the opinion that the 512MB SD card can cause lack of satellite signal per se. What I do think is that the iPAQ can freeze when selecting data stored on the SD card.

Since my original posting I've been roaming around the rest of the Pocket GPS World site (jolly fine it is too) and I found mention of a ROM patch download for the 3970 iPAQ which is to solve a known conflicts with SD cards. I have downloaded and installed same, tested the system and am now 98% certain my troubles are over. My 2% uncertainty will only be allayed when I next use the system in Europe.
