etrex legend

hi sorry if this has been answerd before i have tried a search but i couldnt find anything.
I have recently taken up mountain biking and would like to get a gps unit to save on buying loads of o.s.maps and now looking on the web you can get a etrex legend for about $100 which is a lot cheaper than in the uk but they have the us basemap on them am i right of thinking that it doesnt matter what basemap it has on it as i will be using a thrid party mapping software anyway, for example tracklogs. also which third party software is best for cycling cross country and is the etrex legend the right sort of gps unit to get
i will be using it in the uk

so to summerise
does it matter about the US basemap or should i get an EU one ?
what sort of software is best for x country cycling ?
and is the etrex legend suitable for my needs ?

I cannot advise you on what software to use but no, there is no difference in hardware except the basemap.
Anyway the basemap is useless you need a local more detail map to be of any use (you have to buy).

When you say 3rd party software are you saying software in a PDA/PC?
In that case what basemap you have is irrelevant.

If you are saying to install 3rd party software in the Legend I am afraid there is not much, if any.

The only software with x country maps are Garmins own Topo ones but with the limitations of tiny memory and monochrome screen it makes the Legend totally unsuitable for your needs.you could look at the Garmin Cx series of Gps but they will cost a lot more than a $100. you also need to check the topo map viewer to see if the topo maps are good enough for your purpose,if they are not then Memory Map on a Pda is an option

ok cheers for that as im a total newbie i think im getting there ...so i would be better off with something like an etrex vista cx (us model) and could i use memorymap with that

You can not display MM maps on that gps but you can plan a route ot your PC in mm and then download that into gps to follow later .
