is it ok to buy second hand tom tom one, or will the registration cause a problem if previously owned (product key)?

I don't think that there is a problem as long as you take over everything.

The GO itself has a "Device Code". You can find this from the Preferences/Show Info.

The system software can be downloaded for free from the TomTom site.

If you have this, you will have a working GO! But no maps to look at.....

The "Product Code" relates to the map only. It comes on a separate plastic card like a credit card. To have a working map you need to have the map SD card and the matching product code.

The product code and device code are needed in www.ttcode.com to get the activation code.

The only risk is that the map has been activated on another GO before its been sold on to you. Ask for the activation code before you buy and check it's valid on the TTCODE site.

You need to be sure that the Product Code has not been linked to any other Device Code. If it has, although your map may work, you will not be entitled to any discounted map upgrades.

If it has been used on www.ttcode.com. It will only be OK if it has been used to link the map you are buying to the device you are buying.

There's a huge amount of dodgy motherless mongrels out there, so if you don't trust the source then walk away might be the best course.

I bought my TTOne off ebay as a Brand new Boxed TTOne, off a fella with 100% f/back and had sold at least 4TT's before, so I was happy.

But most of the ads on ebay seemed too good to be true, normally meaning exactly that Sad

It's always the same on ebay though when something new and highly desirable hits the market, lots of scum out there ready to catch the gulible and make easy money selling fresh air or stolen stuff.

I don't have the license agreement in front of me, but I don't think that you can transfer it (the license) to another person, also if your unit is broken and you are not the original owner TT are not going to help you.

I have the EULA in front of me and it is some what eye testing to read but there is one part that you should pay attention to.

Second section: GRANT OF LICENSE quote from within this section "This License is non-exclusive and non-transferable"

Only the person that bought the software/ device can be the rightful owner, if you purchase the software/ device second hand or from a non -approved supplier you will be in breach of the EULA, what did surprise me was "lending...... of software/ hardware is prohibited" - does this mean you are in breach of EULA for giving your device to someone for a weekend trip? -

I must admit its the first time I have bothered to read it, the type set is too small - Any one in the legal profession within the UK who can read the small print care to add to this ? - Mike

TT ONE will run all of that with no extra software. But you will probably need to buy a bigger SD card as the one that comes with the ONE is pretty full. I think it's a 128MB card. Try a 256 card. Make sure it's an SD card and not an MMC which looks the same.

When you get your new ONE. Copy the card to your PC before you do anything else. Check you have downloaded everything. The download file should be around 115MB. Then if you get a problem with any card (overloading and crashing it is common!) you will be able to wipe it and start again. But a failure will be less likely on a bigger card.

I would suggest a belt and braces approach.

Buy TT ONE
Connect it to PC with USB cable.
Copy card to PC.
Remove card from ONE and keep safe.
Insert new blank 256 MB SD card.
Copy backup from PC to new card on the ONE.

Then you will have a backup on the PC for emergencies.
And a pristine SD card in a cupboard if everything goes wrong.

Off topic but something else in the EULA that most people are not aware of is the 2 year warranty.

"TomTom warrants to you that the Hardware will be free from defects in workmanship and materials for a period that is the shorter of (a) two (2) years from the date that the Hardware was first purchased by you"

I thought that was the case with the original GOs, not with the current range

go for 1GB card, the difference in price is not that great these days and you'll have enough room to add more maps

You could be right I have the classic, maybe some one with a 300 / 500 or one of the 10 series could check.
