1st of all thanks to Dippy for a very imformative post.
Im new to this and am trying for the first time to get this to work.

All was going well until i ran into the same problem as Robot1000
OpenCommDevice: Failed to Open " Error No 123.

I too am using the new version of the NV-U50 with software ver 1.06.
I will hunt around for a solution to this problem and post here when i find an answer.

Can i request the same from you guys if you find a way around :P

Method
------
1) Access to the CE interface

The Sony unit automatically runs the Sony navigation software on startup. We first need to prevent that happening.

You need to get a copy of a program called showtaskbar.exe for Windows CE to do that. I got my copy from a site called GPS Passion. If you want to do the same then

a) Go to http://www.gpspassion.com and create an account, which is free

b) Go to http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=20018 and download "pack 150/220/240". That will be saved locally as custom150.zip.

Extract the file called showtaskbar.exe to your PC

Plug the Sony unit into your PC. You are going to use Activesync to copy the file across.

In Activesync, once connected, click "Explore".

Browse to Mounted Volume\Sony\Nav-U

Rename the existing Sony software from Nav-U.exe to Nav-u2.exe

Copy showtaskbar.exe to the Sony in the folder Mounted Volume\Sony\Nav-U

Rename showtaskbar.exe on the Sony as Nav-U.exe

Step 1 is complete. If you reboot your Sony now (after unplugging it from the PC of course) it will no longer boot the Sony software, but should give you a Windows interface, complete with start menu and control panel. ...

Mine fails there. I just get the "NAV-U" Home page hung forever.

Any ideas ?

Cheers.

It probably hasn't hung, the desktop on the device is also the Sony NAV-U screen, if you look at the bottom there should be a thin line which if you keep tapping, try in different places, it should pop up and show you the start button. Now you can go to settings and taskbar and untick "Auto Hide"

Thanks I'll have a look. Was expecting a Windows-type desktop to appear.

And thanks for your recently updated TomTom post elsewhere on here...

Youre using thew wrong sort of file to convert - it should be a csv (comma separated), not a ov2 file. Just download the camera database again in the other format and try again.

That's three people that have reported that, and two of them so far have said they have version 1.06 of the software. Do you have 1.06 too?

It's only up to 1.05 on the Sony website so I can't get 1.06 onto mine to help you or eliminate that idea!

fixed it. When i first got the sat nav it was ver 1.06 but if you reinstall to factory settings off the CD that came with it, it changes to ver 1.0.

After that go to the sony website and click on the update to ver 1.5 link. HEY presto !

My problem is the same as above can i add u to msn or meet in MIRC to talk?

I still have the problem creating the oberver file where it shows the error "not a numeric value"

I have lots of file such as:

Garmin, Navman, Excel, CoPilot5, Other, etc etc

Which one do i want?

No problem. Think my brain was dribbling out of my ears last night.

What you need is the .asc format files - at any rate, the format of things should be - NO header row, and quaotes around the position coordinates, but NOT the camera description. So it should look like this on each line:

"-2.09934","50.70723",GATSO:2@30

I may have misremembered that the Excel format one doesn't have that and the .asc one does, I think. Sorry if I wasted your whole evening.

You can hand fudge what you've got with a find and replace facility in Word or something (I did that once) if you want!

Ok... i done everything and followed your tutorial right to the end.

Should i notice a difference to the display even though i have no GPS in my home?

Or do i need to take it out on the road and get near a speed camera before the speed symbol pops up and the wav plays?

Nothing to see until you get near a camera, then all being well, bingo.
