I'm trying to create a custom POI for a Particular Location in Spain (I do have a Spanish map card, of course). I'm using PoiEdit (I don't have Excel) to create the csv file and then saving it as a Garmin csv file into my usual Garmin folder which contains the speed camera files and Oldboys motorway junction files. Then using the Garmin POI Loader I'm loading the contents of the Garmin folder to the i3.

When done the speed camera and the motorway junction Poi's all work as normal but although my newly created POI shows up under the Custom points heading, when I select it it tells me that no matches were found and so I can get no further.

Obviously I'm somehow creating this file wrongly. Can someone tell me how please?

Thanks PaulB2005 but I'm loath to use a sledgehammer to crack a nut, so to speak, when surely PoiEdit ought to do what I need without using up much needed HD space.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Even easier use Notepad, try opening one of your current POI .csv files, it should look like this (IKEA):

;Longitude,;Latitude,;Name,;Details
-0.25386,51.55441,Ikea Brent Park London,
-2.56466,51.47452,Ikea Bristol,
-0.12442,51.38178,Ikea Croydon,
-3.16671,55.88274,Ikea Edinburgh,
-1.66782,54.95577,Ikea Gateshead,
-4.3644,55.87158,Ikea Glasgow,
-1.64422,53.74477,Ikea Leeds,
-1.2809,53.00195,Ikea Nottingham,
0.28253,51.48131,Ikea Thurrock,
-2.61433,53.41619,Ikea Warrington,
-3.189375,51.46086,Ikea Cardiff,
-2.011878,52.56871,Ikea Wednesbury,M5/M6

Just use the same syntax for yours then save it with a .csv extension. CSV files are just text, nothing fancy. People say use Excel because it interprets them as cells and the CSV format is designed for import into spreadsheets, databases etc though there's absolutely nothing to stop you using notepad or any other text editor to edit or create them.

As Follows

Click My Computer
On the "Tools" menu select "Folder Options"
Select the "View" tab
Untick "Hide extensions for known file types"

Edit your file in notepad
Select "Save As" from the "File" menu
name your file your_filename.csv

If you don't like to see the file extensions go back into Folder Options and re-tick "Hide extensions for known file type"

Andy

Sorry forgot about that, always like to see extensions myself so an oversight.

Many thanks Andy & Chas. As I'm running 98SE, Folder Options is got at via Start then Settings rather than My Computer.

I did create a csv file via Notepad as you suggested but sadly the result was similar to that achieved with POI files created using PoiEdit, in that when loaded into the i3 and selected from 'Where To', 'No Matches Found' is displayed.

I have got somewhat further though, in that if from 'Where to' I select a nearby favourite then select 'Find Nearby' then select 'Food Hotels & More' then select 'Custom Points' then finally select my own custom heading, no longer do I get 'No Matches Found' but instead the name of the POI which when selected allows me to see its icon when 'Show Map' is selected.

This just isn't how the other custom points work and I am at a loss to see any logic in how this situation is happening. Effectively it prevents me from putting in POI's and directly selecting them to navigate to.

This can't be right, I must be doing something wrong.

Odd, sorry I don't know the Garmin devices but I do know it's not a 98SE feature, as I use this OS at home :D .

Have you tried copying an existing and working custom POI set under a new name just to see if that is still recognised Question

If that works, amend the first POI with the data you want to show, and if everything is still good replace the rest of the file with your data (just ensure you maintain the correct format within the file).

I've just tried adding the required POI as the first item in a file of otherwise fully functioning POI's and loading it into the i3. The result was that the required POI was not showing at all and yet all the others in the list
did and functioned as they should.

In the vernacular - this is doin' my bl**din' 'ead in.
