Please could someone recommend the best warning distance to use for the PocketGPSWorld speed camera database warnings.

I use the individual files so would need distances for each warning.

Thanks in advance,

John

I think its very much down to individual taste, but for the record mine is set at 300 yds

i also think it is down to personal preference ,as mine are set to 600 yards except for mobile speed camera is set to 1000 yards as sometimes they can be on a long straight road Laughing

And a tip that someone else posted before, which I use.

If you want to have a warning at (say) 600 yards and again at (say) 200 yards, copy the OV2 and BMP files to a different name and include them both as POI's. Then set one to 600 yards and one to 200 yards, with different noises for each....

Try converting the distance to time in seconds - this way you get the warning in plenty of time with respect to the speed zone of the specific camera, with 1760 yards in a mile therefore at 70MPH you will cover 1027 yards in 30 seconds (1760x70=123200)
123200/3600 (seconds in one hour) = 34,2 then multiply this value by the time period you want for a prior warning - I also add to the resultant figure an extra 300 yards for the mobile cameras, and use the double warning system as detailed above to get a reminder, in addition to this I also set a warning for the cameras I have recorded using POICapture so as not to multiple capture the same camera - Mike

I have mine set at 600 yards and 200 yards with warnings set at those distances. I have made a sound file with installation instructions for any that want it at http://www.predator.org.uk/ttn5/
Enjoy

I'm considering doing the same, but isn't there a limit to how many POIs you can have?

Does anyone know what the limit is? I think I remember seeing a figure of 63 in total (including the standard set), but it would be nice to have some confirmation.

Nice one Mystery, just gave it a test on my Mio168 and works fine.

However, I don't really need the warning at 600 yards in a 30mph limit. If the voice warning had just said 'Warning Speed Camera', I would have used it in conjunction with mikealder idea of calculating time/distance to get the warning in plenty of time with respect to the speed zone of the specific camera.

I just did a few calculations and find if I use the 34.2 x 30secs, I get 1026 yard first warning in a 70mph zone.

I use the PGPSW Safety Camera database mainly to let me know I am approaching an area, in which I'm not familiar, that has a poor safety record.

I assume there are others who use it as a reminder if they stray over the limit, me too, or those who just feel the need to speed. The problem for them, using the above calculation, is that the 1026 yards given by the 30 second warning may be no good if they are doing 80mph, where a 30 second warning would have to come at 1173 yards.

I did some calculations using 30, 20, 15 a 10 seconds. I decided to use 15 seconds as a warning but use the 10mph higher distance settings.

MPH - Yards - Mine set at.
70 - 513 - 587
60 - 440 - 513
50 - 366 - 440
40 - 294 - 366
30 - 221 - 294
20 - 147 - 275

Better than the TT default of 271 yards throughout the range which I had been using.

Far easier to use CheckPOInt v5 (free download), then you can have 2 warning at different distances, and also another warning if you are over the preset limit. No need then to import the POI file twice

Checkpoint was great on TTN3 but after upgrading to 5 I was put off by the 'flashing' warning countdown.

I believe Mystery, the genius, is on the right lines, it's only the 600 and 200 yard warnings that stop me using it.

Maybe Mystery could change the words to 'Speed Camera in 30 seconds', couple this with mikealder's suggestion and everyone could easily adapt their unit to their own circumstances.

You can 39 more POI's of your choice to the built-in Groups.

In response to requests I shall endeavour to make a sound file that combines both the Speed cam 600/200 files and add the speed cam 30 secs and traffic cam 30 secs warnings for you. The main problem is finding a decent speech engine as the one I used before is no longer available ( that one was http://www.rhetorical.com/cgi-bin/demo.cgi now closed )
Keep an eye out on the site I previously posted as I hope to complete by the end of this weekend.
Have fun
