With the various systems now available, free and fee paying, via GPRS and radio, general commercial or via the GPS programme supplier, just how EFFECTIVE are they??????????????

Problem No1 must be the reliability and updating of the traffic data:-
i.e. time delay from incident to reporting, Actual effect on traffic and most likely extra time for journey, reporting of end of incident and free traffic flow. Have we any information on the relative reliability of each source of traffic information??

Problem No2 relates to the algorythm used in the GPS programme. Some simply re-route automatically when an incident is reported on the current route, i.e. irrespective of delay or extent of re-route. These, such as route 66, are completely useless in practical circumstances!!!

What is needed is an algorythm which compares the 'expected' delay with the 'extra time' of a chosen re-route and selects the solution with most time effective journey. Have we any ideas of the logic applied by the various GPS software????

In the meantime, in my opinion, an effective system needs to warn the driver, preferably audibly, advise of the 'extent' of the delay and allow a choice of re-route or not.

Any comments or ideas welcome and predicted long term expectations of the 'perfect' solution for the future.

My personal opinion is that mesh networks are the way to go. Cars will be networked with each other so you will have the information on the current moving speed of traffic in front of you (no matter if one mile ahead or 100 miles ahead) and can base your decisions on that.

This will be much more precise than the current technology of relying on the company that is maintaining the road sensors, the transmittion to the radio station, the transformation into TMC, the sending to the TMC receiver, and the incorporation of the message into the navigation etc.
