I'm in the process of making a home made GPS locator that plugs into any cheap garmin handheld, or other unit that can provide garmin text output. It cost less than 20 quid to make.

It displays distance to the camera and the speed limit at the camera.

The unit also has an audiable indicator or distance (and a mute button).

The only problem is... i need a database of speed cameras that includes the speed limit for each camera. does the pocket gps databse include this? how can i extract it?

The tools only seem to provide text format of lat, long and Gatso ID.

Thanks

Hughe

Sounds interesting! At the moment our database does not include speed information for every camera. When we initially launched the database it was not possible to capture this information simply. With the release of CheckPOInt this is now possible and we are now capturing this data if it is submitted.

Some cameras have the necessary information but only a small percentage.

Good luck with your project but I should draw your attention to the disclaimer which accompanies our database:

I'm planning to make the whole design open; i'll be posting the schematics, pcb design and PIC code on a website when its working (i have no intent to sell anything) and i'll point people at your site for a database?

I took it for a test run last night around edinburgh and it picked up most of the cameras but not all so i'll be adding a function to capture new camera positions and speed oto the box.

also my garmin etrax wondering around is also causing some problems. It seems to guess where the next position is going to be and average it with what is received, with the result that when you stop it keeps going and then comes back to where you are.

That's fine and the unit looks great! OOI If the speed limit is indicated using the digits, how are you indicating distance. What is the memory limit?

Very best of luck, you're obviously at an advanced stage already Thumbs Up

The speed limit is on the display, the distance is displayed on the 6 leds
(green, green, orange, orange, red, red) and there is also a beep that gets faster as you get nearer.

Its got 64k of memory (theoreticaly expandable to 256k) and its 7 bytes per camera record so thats 9360 records maximum.
