been going crazy trying to decide on a PDA package
with TomTom software, etc...
would like bluetooth functions (possibly wifi as well but not essential)

would i be better off with package or buying seperate as i've seen a really cheap Dell Axim X30 Performance 624Mhz from totalpda.com
and could buy a Holux Powered GPS PDA Mount for Dell X3
this combo only totals around £260 plus a couple o quid for software, (but i'm sure my mates got this software handy)

oh yeah and hello everyone
i'm a new member
a GPS Virgin

another option could be to use my recent purchase (New Road Angel 2) as the gps reciever ?
would this work with the tom tom software on the dell axim x30 ?

many thanks
D.A.Thomas

I would guess that the only sat nav software you can buy for a couple of quid will be dodgy pirated versions that may or may not work. Besides being illegal you would have no come back and no update path. The same applies to the software "borrowed" from your mate - even if he could crack it so it worked on your PDA. Therefore you will need to add about £100 for something like TT5.

My first suggestion would be to buy legal software

After that it depends what you are after and why. If you are never going to use the other functions of a PDA why spend extra for them?

I need a PDA and also use a mobile phone when in my car. So I bought an Ipaq 6340 combined PDA and quad band phone. Then I added a Parrot 3300 bluetooth combined car kit and sat nav receiver and fed it all through my car audio. Works well for me but it was not cheap, and I can understand why many people would not want it all.

i didn't say anything about pirate software
Rolling Eyes

anyway

back to the point
yes i would use the other functions on the PDA
plus the pda option is not alot more costly than the in-car (specific sat-nav systems)
Confused
for tha sake of an extra few quid i'd rather the PDA option
as i would use the other features
just not sure on what combo to go for
as far as device and software compatability

Try your Phone provider and see if you can get an upgrade to a PDA Phone. You don't have to use it as a phone if you don't want to. Most providers have a variant of the HTC handhelds which are windows mobile 2003/2005 based. Might get you up and running with hardware at least. Still need a cradle/gps receiver/software etc.

The XDA range (also badged under the names of QTek & imate) are about as good as you'll get.
There is a smallish model called the imate Jam (aka XDA mini, QTek S500). This device coupled with TomTom will give you a fantastic GPS package with the device also serving as your mobile phone.
