Argos are in the habit of doing that - most things seem to come in an additional Argos brown cardboard box. Doing their bit for the rainforests I guess.

I reckon the 2nd box is so the staff dont know whats inside.........

I think you are right, my iPod came in an extra brown box.

This is a reply I receievd this morning from Garmin Europe.

Good Morning,

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

In regard to your email, Mapping updates are usually released every 12
months around the end of the year. The have been no announcements when/if
City Select Europe v.8 will be released and there is no cut-off date
announced.

Therefore I cannot tell you if you were to purchase the software today, that
you would be entitled to a free update. There is usually a month period for
the cut-off date, where-by if you purchase within a month of the update
being released, you would be entitled to a free update.

We do not even have a rough estimate of when any updates will be released
for City Select Europe and will not until such an announcement is published
on the Garmin website.

If you have any further questions please let me know.

Seems to be at odds with other messages from Garmin posted on here.
I have emailed Argos today and asked them why they are continuing to sell the older versions at the same price as the new ones

Watch this space.

See earlier in this thread - same as the message that I got from Luke R.

Other people have had positive emails though saying that the update will be free. Various cut off dates for purchases have also been given though.

Think we are going round in circles with Garmin.

I think what can happen is that the staff opens it, steals the GPS out of the box and then closes it again. Then the customer buys the item and WTF! there is no GPS inside it! So customer returns the box to complain and Argos have no way of knowing if the customer is lying or one of their staff stole the item out of the box.

Putting the box in a secure box before shipping to the Argos store would prevent this....

Yes, if you brought it over the Internet, you haven't opened any shrink wrapped software and you return it in as new condition within 7 days then they have to take it backunder the distance selling regulations.

They may take it back as a gesture of good will even if you don't meet all these conditions...

Well I got it a couple of hours ago and it has v8 maps so I am happy with it.

However just a small point is that I uploaded the POI following the idiots guide on the forum, but in map mode or guide mode the POI icons are not showing.

Have I done something wrong?

One place that I went to today, using the custom POI's, shows the logo using the method above but didnt when I was navigating to it or when I had arrived and was just showing map. v2.70 / v8 maps
