I think the battery on my MIO 168 is dying as it hardly lasts anytime at all now. Is it possible to replace the battery or do I have to replace the whole unit?

Thanks

This question seems to be asked a few times, and the information is not that easy to find. Especially since the official response seems to be that the battery is not replacable and the unit should be replaced when it expires.

Would this be a suitable post to be made 'sticky'?

The Mio-tech site is easy to find & one of the FAQ is aboult battery replacement.

Question & Mio response

Can I replace a dead battery by myself?

Batteries can only be replaced by returning your device to your dealer. Any attempt to replace the battery yourself will result in a loss of all waranty.

Check it out yourself at

http://www.mio-tech.be/support/faqs/index.php?sid=19995&lang=en&action=artikel&cat=3&id=23&artlang=en

Mio 168 FAQ page is at http://www.mio-tech.be/support/faqs/index.php?action=show&cat=3

Cover many more Mio units as well.

Given the warranty issues (which I guess will soon not apply to my Mio 168, given it's age), I'm interested to know if anyone has experience of replacing a battery for themself. And if so, how complex a procedure was it?

Always good to be prepared. Smile

I've just had mine open to see if I could fix a problem with the joystick (I couldn't) but it looks like a battery replacement would be an easy enough job.

Backup your system first - removing the battery will cause a hard reset, wiping everything off.

Remove the four screws in the corners of the back (no need to take out the one on the antenna hinge) then gently prise apart the case at the bottom using your fingernails- the back will come away and you will see the battery in the middle of the innards - it is stuck down, so you will need to free it (I think it is held down with one of those sticky pads) then disconnect it from the circuit board. Connect the new one and re-assemble, making sure you connect the antenna lead to the circuit board before you put it back together, as it pops off when you remove the back - it's a bit fiddly, but easy enough.

Click the case back together and replace the screws. Charge up the new battery and you should be good to go.

Don't forget that this will invalidate your warranty

Sequin that's a really useful piece of information. Thanks. Hope I never have to use it, but I for one will keep it handy just in case.

As a matter of interest do we know what the capacity of the standard Mio 168 battery is?
The replacement on that link is 1300 mah, and it seems to suggest that this is a higher capacity.
Anyone know?

According to the spec. listed at http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/mio-168-pocket-pc-including-car-kit-specification.html
it is 900Mah. so the replacement is approx. 44% higher capacity.

Sounds good if you are out of guarantee.

Thanks,
It does sound well worth while when the original fails.
What experience have owners of the Mio of initial battery life?
Is it a couple of years, or maybe less?

Sequin,
You posted helpful instructions here about how to replace the battery.
I have followed these, and all seemed to work well, but I no longer have a GPS signal.
I opened the case again twice to check that I had connected the antenna lead, and I am sure that it is securely fixed, is there anything else I may have forgotten?
Hope you can advise?
