Does any one have any details of the version 5 release? I keep seeing it alluded to - the latest being a mention for the CycleShow 2005. However their website does not mention it all.

I only bought version 4 at the start of the year - I wonder what their upgrade policy is, or indeed what else they could add to this excellent product (bar a few niggles).

Yes, there are some deliberately mysterious ads appearing in various magazines (I saw it in Country Walking).

If you go to www.memory-map.co.uk/v5 there is a signup box for more info when it is ready.

If the same problems still stand at the time of upgrade as last time, the OS licencing of their maps requires that Version 5 of Memory Map will only work with Version 5 OS Maps.

This means that you not just need to upgrade the application, but all the maps as well, which for the whole of the UK is not a cheap option. I seem to remember that the upgrade offer to current registered users was around half price.

Spot on prediction I have just loaded up vs5 and it all works but not with 2004 maps, there will have to be a significant change to the UK costline or walking areas to warant a purchase of this magnitude - Mike

Jigsaw,

The link on that forum is to the USA site and is for the US version. The US webpage directs UK users to MM UK, where the latest version is still V4.

I subscribed for V5 news and haven't received anything yet, but it should follow soon.

Regards

Nice advert, but as above, unless there is a dramatic change in the coast line, roads and footpaths there is not going to be mass upgrading at the prices being charged. When will organisations like OS and other map interested companies realise that maps take a long time to alter in a stable country like the UK. If they are trying to tempt us with new 'features' then sorry it doesn't work Nice to have but I can still get around from a to d via b and c without all the 'new features' using v2004.

I too am quite happy with my OS 2004 maps but I would like to be able to use the improvements that Memory-Map have made to the basic application program. These improvements themselves do not require any new map features as they are associated with the management of overlays. So why cannot Memory-Map release a version that will work with the old maps.

I fail to see how a company can get themselves into a position where they cannot release an improved version of their own program without us having to fork out for new maps.

Come on Memory-Map sort out your licensing agreement with OS Exclamation

Richard

Hi Richard,

I think it's the OS that are still stuck in the dark ages. All the mapping software companies seem to have to accept similar restrictions.

Memory Map seem to have a very "relaxed" attitude to the OS mapping download limit (to PPC), whilst Fugawi rigidly enforces the "1600 sq km" rule. And is it really a "mistake" that it's quite so easy to "convert" 2004 maps to work with v5? BTW if you're looking for a Hex Editor try Googling "xvi32 download" :-).

However, I probably will get an official upgrade in due course, as the aerial photography does seem good value (and isn't covered by OS restrictions :-)).

Cheers, Alan.

I fully agree - I would like to know what they have changed (map wise that is), I cannot believe that its as easy as that to get 04 maps working in 05 software (not putting the hee hee in here but was tempted), - I wonder if the same applies to even earlier versions (I don't have any so I can't find out) - I only wish TT5 maps were as easy to retro into vs3 - please be aware that messing around around with Copyright is illegal so be warned, get the correct software - for the version you are running - Mike

Not much you can do when a single entity (government or not) has a monopoly on the map data. Every other country that uses the Memory-Map software has free access to the V5 update. Granted, our USGS maps (here in the States) are a far cry from the OS detail and quality, but we have free access to them. To be honest, I would pay a fair amount to have accurate and high quality maps of the US. I imagine if the OS didn't maintain the extremely high standards they do for their maps, they wouldn't have a market.
