POCKETGPS Summit 5-6th July 2003

Waterhead Hotel, Ambleside,Cumbria

We have around 30 people currently registered for this event.

We are meeting up in the car park of the Waterhead Hotel Ambleside Cumbria at 10:00 each day. We will then have a complete day looking at GPS hardware, the latest Street Routing Software, TopoGraphical Maps and also using GPS equipment in the field.

If you are coming to the PocketGPS Summit this note suggests some of the things you might want to bring along with you.

Clothing:

If you intend to take part in the walks you need to be prepared for the British Summer weather. A suggested minimum will include:
  • Stout waterproof shoes or preferably walking boots, trainers are not advised for any but the low level activities. Although we will not be doing any climbing or really strenuous walking footwear is important and some areas are guaranteed to be boggy.
  • Shorts or Trousers made from Polycotton or similar material. Jeans are not suitable for Fell Walking as they retain water if caught in a shower.
  • Woollen Jumper or Fleece, both excellent for warmth and insulation properties when wet.
  • Waterproof overcoat: Again knowing what the British summer is like and the changeability of the weather some form of waterproof is a must.
If you are planning on some of the longer walks then the following equipment would also be useful:
  • Waterproof over-trousers
  • Cap or hat
  • Waterbottle (alcohol optional extra!)
  • Packed lunch (both days)
  • Small day-bag for carrying spare clothing etc.
Equipment

Please feel free to bring along any:
  • PDAs, GPS devices or other items to discuss or use on the event.
  • Map and Compass OS Outdoor Leisure 6 and 7 (Lakes SE and SW) or Harvey's Superwalker Lakeland Central.
  • First Aid kit: Not expecting to require one but plasters are good for blisters, and Vaseline can help prevent them!!
We will be arranging walks and events for most ability levels. Please be aware of your limitations and do not attempt anything exceeding your personal comfort/ability level. All of the walks will take place on the fells of the lakedistrict and although some may be reasonably flat the paths underfoot will be rugged and not suitable for all people.

The precise itinerary will be decided on the day dependant on what participants wish to do and the weather conditions. This can range from discussions in the Pub, to GeoCaching (slightly off the roads, but within 5 minutes of safe road access points.), to 1/2 day ridge walks. We will also hold informal discussions in one or more local pubs where we can sample the fine cuisine and supp the local brews. Strangely most of our walks start/finish at a pub!

If there is anything that you would particularly like to cover in some of these discussions please email us at summit@pocketgpsworld.com to let us know. We will then be able to prepare and have the right gear ready.

Lets get out there and have fun!!

Keep your eyes open for all those other TTN users navigating the country lanes We have just got back from a TTN guided tour of country lanes in North Devon, luckily you are all in the Lake District.

Have fun.
