I have just bought a MDPPC 150 from KwikSave and have found that if you don't have MN5 then Navigon doesn't seem to want to know you, hope I'm wrong

Can you blame them? It's a Medion branded version of the software sold at considerably less than Navigon is. Your contact needs to be with Medion not Navigon.

Thanks for the swift reply. I was looking at the upgrade options on Navigon's site and it appears that the MDPPC100 is losted as a compatible unit. So, what is the difference between that and the MDPNA100? So me is seems clear cut. Like for the latter, the only difference being a sifferent casing, some rejig of the electronics, but apart from that am I right in assuming that the MDPNA100 is identical to the MDPPC100, except that the MDPNA100 has got a bog-standard GPS receiver gung off COM1?

If this is the case I could risk going for the upgrade. I could make a copy of the software CD's shipped with the MDPNA100 and send off the originals to Navigon to get the upgrade price, but choose the MDPPC100 option. Memory card is not a problem as I already have a 1Gb SD card.

Any assistance would be helpful.

The MDPNA's and MDPPC's are wholly different hardware. The MDPNA's are WinCE 4.11 based devices, this is not the same as PocketPC and so very few applications intended for PocketPC will run on them.

Oh... I'm getting a little more confused, so I'll let the MDPNA100 `Info Viewer` do the talking . . .
Quote:
Model No.: MDPNA100
Product Revision: 1.0
Processor type: SAMSUNG S3C2410(ARM)
Processor clock: 266 MHZ
Screen: 3.5" 240x320 TFT
Data Flash: 32MB
RAM Size: 64MB
Total Memory: 55.29MB
ROM Version: MDPNA100 V 1.00M WWE 18.00
OS Version: Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003
GPS Interface: NMEA 0183 Version 2.2

I've left out the serial number and UUID, but what you see quoted above is as shown on the MSPNA100's info viewer applet. Since I got the MDPNA100 I have installed a fair few applications desgned for W2002 and WM2003 and thay have all worked flawlessly. Most of the applications I have installed would never operate on WinCE.

Did I pick up a later and revised version of the MSPNA100 From Hal***ds? It has PocketPC tattoed on the front and the battery cover has `Designed for Windows Mobile` moulded into it.

It has not got WinCE in it. It actually is Windows Mobile 2003. It's a pity it's not the second edition of WM2003.

Drat.. Can't edit a post..

Maybe that's why there is the condusion at Navigon. Is Navigon aware that MDPNA100's operate as actual fully fledged PocketPC's? When it's hard reset, there is no trace of Medion's Navigator installed on the system and it does operate as any WM2003 pocket PC without navivation software. It is necessary to manually install Medion-MobileNavigator off the memory card or via ActiveSync (I think..) from the computer.

I know quite a bit about the MDPNA100 to date. I've been exploring the software innards for a while, like the structure of the Registry, etc . . .

That could be the issue here, I had the thought the MDPNA100 was another incarnation of the MDPNA150/175 etc which is WinCE.

As you correctly demonstrate, the MDPNA100 is in fact a bog standard Windows Mobile PocketPC with an integrated GPS.

In that case, Navigon's PocketPC software will work fine. My apologies for compunding the confusion here Sad

I know. It would have been better if the MDPNA100 has been given the a model code of MDPNA200. It's easier to see that it's the next version up, but instead some bright spark decided to name it MDPNA100, making the MDPNA150 and MDPNA175 appear superior to the MDPNA100.

Does this make any sense? Confuses the hell out of me. Still, it appears that I'm in luck then.

Only other thing is am I stuck with Windows Mobile 2003 and haver no chance to upgrade to Windows Mobile 2003 standard edition? 8O

It shouldn't have been called MDPNAxxx at all, that was supposed to be reserved for the non PocketPC devices, it should be an MDPPCxxx , is it any wonder it has confused everyone ;)

Yet the MDPPC100 actually exists! So Medion decided to brand it a PNA because when you buy it you have aq GPS receiver if you like it or not?

HEY! I ain't complaining. It's so very and utterly convenient!

Because it's been difficult to get a definative answer from Navigon or elsewhere I had to bend the rules.

Knowing that a copy of NM5 with a keygen (now hear me out before stamping on my head!!!) will allow the evaluation of NM5, but where the navigation function is useless, I decided to obtain copy and a keygen.

I tested NM5's ability of following me on the map as I'm driving.

Anyway, I've since removed NM5 from my MDPNA100, but I'm happy to report that MN5 update 1 does in fact work on the MDPNA100 as I've seen it work with my own eyes.

All that remains is for me to purchase a copy of MN5 and a key for UK cartography.

What I like about NM5 is that I could fully install it on the 1Gb SD card and it runs off the SD card where Medion Navigator must be installed on the MNPNA100's internal memory. The speed of NM5 is acceptible on the MDPNA100.
