tomtom allows you to mark a gps position. Unfortunately, if it is off road, it says 'No usable locations near GPS position'. I was surprised that I can't use it to help find my car.

Has anybody managed to do this?

i work in a spot where the m1 is 50 meters one way and a minor road is 50 meters the other when i park in the carpark and try to set the gps point it will either set to the m1 or if i am nearer to the minor road it will set the gps point to that
it will not set to a point that is not on a road i presume because it needs roads to navigate you to the set point

i may be wrong but thats my view

i navigate to the trams in notting ham and the nearest i can get is wilkinson street it allows me to set a point on that road but will not set a point in the carpark that is not mapped

when you start from a point that is not on a road tt is lost until you get to a road so that it knows where you are

hope this helps

TomTom will not navigate to a position which is off-road. You can mark one, but it will just take you to the nearest point it can reach by roads it knows about.

Thanks for the replies.

The inability to calculate a route is something that I can tolerate. However, the ability to identify the position would be useful.

I think I may have a workaround.
1. Use 'Browse map' and put the cursor on top of the GPS position.
2. Save the cursor position as a favourite. It will be shown on 'Browse map' as a star.
3. To get yourself back to that position, simply head towards the star.

Does that work for you guys?

It works on the TTG, so should be the same for you.

Yes. Using it as a compass to assist you as navigator, rather than using it as the navigator will work off road.

Sorry to jump in late, but might be worth noting the problem I had when trying to find the car in a field after 'V05' the other weekend...

If you have a s60, s80, s90 or UIQ you could try Mapview from WIld Mobile,

http://www.wild-mobile.com/

This is a basic GPS tracker program that you can program in a GPS point and it will give you heading, distance, ETA, ect...

It will also track you as you move around,

You can also load your own maps into it,

Carl,

its a pain the other way round, when you are in a carpark and trying to set a route! it wont calculate it untill you are on (/near) the road. it could just calculate the route and tell you to find your own way to the road to start off with.

i normaly find it will calculate a route from a car park but it has to have an active gps satelite connection
it then goes awray until it finds a road it can start from

i have not tried this from a multi storey but it works on a flat car park
