Hi

I am new to all this GPS stuff so please be gentle.

I am looking to buy a MIO 168 or one of its clones and have a few questions that I would appreciate it if anyone could spend a few moments answering for me, before I dive in head first and buy the wrong thing.

1. Which MIO to buy? I have heard the MIO 168 comes in various guises so which is the best to get (Yakumo, Mitac, Medion etc) or are they all the same just rebadged?

2. What is the difference between a MIO 168 & a MIO 168RS?

3. I have heard talk of a landscape view, can all MIO's do this or do you need a software upgrade?

4. Where is the cheapest place to get one?

5. Is a MIO the best way to go? I basically want a handheld GPS that I can put in the car but also use when on foot, so is the MIO the best of this type or is there another model I should be considering?

If anyone could answer these questions for me I would be very grateful.

Many Thanks in advance
Marcus :D

Hi,

For the money the Mio has to be one of the best buys & I am very happy with mine.

As far as I can see the best place to buy would be

http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/?PHPSESSID=0f25b6f14f757fb915e67ad977add012

or

http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?MIO-168

but I am sure other places do them at a good price.

Hope this helps a little

I recently (like, last week) bought a Mio 168RS and am extremely pleased with it. I believe the major (only?) difference is that the 168RS has a more sensitive Sirf GPS chipset and runs Windows Mobile 2003SE OS (mine is ver 4.21.1088, Build 14235.2.0.0) but I don't know what all those numbers mean!

Using the device on foot depends greatly on the NAV software you buy. A very few offer an "on foot" mode that ignores stuff like one way streets and will not direct you onto a motorway! For "on foot" use, you definitely should go for the Mio, or look-alikes (Medion, Navman PiN) and avoid those that require sleeve or plug-in GPS receivers; those take too much power.

My recommendation? Buy the Mio!
