Take a look at http://www.traffic-i.com/ . This provides high quality, live traffic information from Trafficmaster, via GPRS to a Sony Ericsson P800, Nokia 7650 or Nokia 3650.

BUT NOT A POCKETPC!

I contacted them requesting PocketPC support and they said that they are investigating porting Traffic-i to other platforms including the Pocket PC.

I would just love to get this onto my Pocket PC.

Can all those who would want this contact Traffic-I via the enquiries form and request they support PocketPC - the more of us that ask, the more likely we may get it sooner!!!

Thanks

/Mark

Trafficmaster offer a service for Palm OS users - information on that can be found here.

I suspect traffic-i is using the data from Trafficmaster under licence.

What has not happened to date from anyone to my knowledge is a Pocket PC version. I've tried to persuade the Trafficmaster PC service to work in Pocket Internet Explorer using Flash Player 6 (it uses Flash), but even once I'd got round the Javascript, the Pocket PC just can't cope with the Flash. It appears to want to write megabytes on end of files, and the Pocket PC just doesn't have enough memory, also the scroll text never works.

What I'd really like to see is Trafficmaster data integrated into TomTom Navigator (I guess this may have to be wishlisted for Navigator 3). However, hopefully traffic-i or Trafficmaster themselves will release a service for the Pocket PC. As I believe such traffic information is integrated into the latest version of CoPilot in at least some countries, hopefully this will make other companies (like TomTom) want to compete.

I guess a lot of the problem is that there may not be a standard format or interface with this data, which means that each data provider may require special code to be written.

My in-car setup is quite capable of accessing the Internet over GPRS as it stands - the iPAQ 3970 sits in a Brodit mount above my Nokia 6310i nestling in its Nokia car kit cradle. All it needs is the iPAQ's Bluetooth turning on...

Looking at the manual of the TomTom Navigator 2 SDK, it seems that a plug in to display traffic data 'live' is possible as things stand. Automatic re-routing support would need additions to the SDK. Personally, I think that re-routing could do with some improvements anyway - for example, a "road is blocked for n junctions" or "road is blocked between junction x and junction y" function would be great. Still, what we have now is not disastrous.
