All,

I'm so near to splashing the cash that it's driving me nuts. But, before I do, can you advise whether Sicily is included in the map for Italy?

Try place names such as Cefalu, Taormina, Siracusa (Syracuse), etc.

Many thx.

Yes, all these places are included. I found two "Cefalu". One is named "Cefalu (Cefalù)" and is a little west of "Cefalù" with only a dozen unnamed roads (small village). The other one is larger and the city border has a diameter of about 2km.

Smallfreak,

Thanks for this. According to TomTom, their (read TeleAtlas') coverage of "Italy" is 97%; yet you look at the map and the leg of Italy is prominently illustrated yet the football of Sicily is knowhere to be seen!!!

A little worrying. Door-to-door across all of Europe???

Can you advise whether the streets of the larger city are there in the same level of detail as you would expect say of the streets of Paris/London etc.?

Many, many thx.

I got the impression that the roads in the "bigger" Cefalù have similar spacing than the ones in other cities. Since I have no first hand knowledge, about the true situation in this city, I can only guess. If you can wait till tomorrow, I will post two images for you to compare. Cefalù and (part of) Paris in similar resolution. Maybe I can manage to grab the same detail fom map24 too.

Some "hardcopy" feature would be nice for a future firmware update...

Hi Spudson - I am in a very similar position to you and thinking of changing to a GO700 in place of my Ipaq/Navman. I too wondered about Sicily (in particular I asked about the level of detail for Catania) - nobody has replied to that part of my question yet but the towns you have listed are generally smaller so it looks promising. My main concern is that the HD will fail before an SD ever will but I do like the idea of all the data permanently available, more memory and the faster processor.

Tabatha,

The other thing to consider is that the 700 has 1GB of free space - that could be used to store other maps (e.g. US & Australia) - so it offers some degree of future proofing.

It's a shame that the receiver is only Sirf II as this isn't as sensitive to picking up the satellite signals as the newer Sirf III chipsets. Sirf II only monitor 12 (only!) whereas III can monitor 20.

Anyhow, it might be worth a re-post on your point re. Catania. I caught sight of your post and noticed that this point hadn't been picked up.

Incidentally, the previous post from smallfreak is particularly of interest. The night before last, I was browsing through Map24 (using TeleAtlas maps) and it looks pretty much up to date - and when you zoom in, it gives a reasonably good level of detail. However, whether the TeleAtlas maps in TT are as good is the true test!!

I'm looking forward to the response from smallfreak.

Cheers

I was not aware of the Sirf business - but almost anything would be better than my Navman sleeve which even with a decent signal can sometimes take up to five minutes to get a first fix from a a cold start!

Is there a comparable product that has the Sirf III chipset?

'Fraid not - or at least that I'm aware of. We'll just have to keep an eye out!!

Thing is, it seems as though the Go is the kit to get.

I expect later releases (e.g. next year) might incorporate these - but at the moment, they've still got old chips to get rid of...

Keep me posted on the Catania question.

Thx

So, here it goes, the ultimative "Cefalù map test".

Compare TTG 700 Cefalù map against equal sized chunk of central Paris. Same level of streets mapped.

Now let's compare the TTG 700 map against Map24:

and against NavTeq CitySelect 7

It looks as if Map24 has exactly the same streets - no wonder this is TeleAtlas too, but NavTeq has a few house entries more. The city as shown in the TTG maps "footpath" where NT adds a few small roads.

This makes me believe that Sicily is mapped to the maximum possible extent that TeleAtlas could provide.

Smallfreak/Stanley_Tweedle,

Guys, this is great. Absolutely brilliant.

Many, many thx for this. One of the biggest downers about trying to buy sat-nav equipment is without kind-hearted souls like yourselves and other supportive forum users, you risk shelling out hundreds of pounds on something that is not readily available to test.

Looks like I'll be splashing some cash!! Yippee!!
