US/UK compatability

hi, im new to this and this question has probably been asked hundreds of times before,

on garmin units, will european mapsource software work on a unit that has a american base map, ie will the software overrule the base map specifically on units such as the GPSIII+ Street pilot and etrex legend vista etc.

Hi James,



Yes European Mapsource software works fine on an America's BaseMap model and overrides any basemap data. The only disadvantage of using an overseas model is that in areas where you have not uploaded any map data the unit has no basemap to fall back on and so you get no map!



I used to own a US GPSIII+ and it was fine with R+R & MG Map data uploaded to it, the basemap on a UK ColorMap I had was a complete waste of time, only major A Roads and M-Ways where on it and even then they were often 100's of yds of the correct position of the roads as the data had been simplified so much.



The GPSIII+ was possible the best Garmin unit I owned.
