Hi Folks,

Just purchased a quest about 9 days ago, and would like to know how to better setup the system for streamlining the navigation.

what i have noticed about the quest, is that when i plan a route that i know, i notice that the quest always seems to direct me to streets i wouldnt take to reach that destination. for example i did one route where i knew a highway would take me to this destination, but when i had quest take me to this destination it routed me there using public streets or would have me turn off to the first intersection it would see. I have setup the quest to 'quickest distance' and 'fastest time'

thanks in advance

Map data can never substitute for local knowledge. So, the Quest will take you to your destination, but it may or may not be the best route. Most of the time the Quest produces routes that are fine, sometimes even surprising people that now know better router than they used for years. ;)

Take time to get to know your Quest. Use it for all your driving, even to locations you can drive to with your eyes closed. You will get to understand the way the Quest reacts, calculates routes and reroutes your if you go off-route.

No machine can replace a human, but the Quest comes close! :D

The Quest uses Navteq mapping software. Navteq, like all other mappng software companies, 'drive' the roads they digitally map to check for accuracy, completeness and local changes that may have been recently introduced. They also check for things like one-way streets that, of course, aren't depicted on maps.
However, they are not capable of driving every road, and thus there are some - usually (invariably?) the more minor roads - that are omitted from the checks. As directing you down an 'unchecked' road might cause problems that Navteq (or Garmin) can't envisage and certainly don't want to be responsible for, such roads are excluded from automatic routing unless there is no reasonable alternative. Some systems, like the Denso system inbuilt into Jaguars, used to warn you when you take an 'unchecked' road.
