pocketgpsworld.comMike and I spent a day at TomTom's Amsterdam Headquarters on Friday. As well as a busy schedule of meetings with development, marketing and the new content teams we came away with some goodies to test including a brand new TomTom GO 300 and TomTom's MKII Bluetooth GPS with SiRFStarIII Chipset.

It seems likely that TomTom GO 300's will go on sale tomorrow in the UK but for now we have the very first to leave TomTom's clutches and I'm delighted to report that the BT connectivity is a breeze to use and I successfully bonded the GO 300 to my C500 Smartphone (too many numbers here!) by following the GO's BT Wizard and can now poll for Traffic and the other PLUS Services easily. I'll be posting more on the new features that V5 brings to the new TomTom GO units shortly as well as more information on the MKII Bluetooth GPS which we discovered is not actually manufactured by Leadtek as has been presumed by all including us until now.

I ought to mention that the package we received and which is the final shipping version comes with both 12v and 240v chargers contrary to what has been posted on some other web sites. Ours also has the GB Plus Map which is UK and Major Roads of Europe although as ours was a Benelux bundle we were given the UK SD seperately so I will need to clarify if retail GO 300's come with the Plus Map.

UPDATE:
I have received clarification from TomTom, the GO 300 will not come with a 240v adapter and the maps are country only, not PLUS maps. The bundle we had was a special for a specific outlet hence the confusion.

Great Darren, did you manage to ask them about the current state of TT Mobile 5 upgrades as many of seem to have paid and our accounts have been debited but the order status page is not acknowledging this. Did they give any timescale as to when they will begin shipping these?

This was a hard choice for us. You can imagine it can't you: On a bridge over the Singel two grown adults fighting over a small box (that doesnt exist yet Wink ).

I certainly came off worse as Darren not only walked off with the GO 300 but also the new BT GPS as well.Crying or Very sad

Looking on a brighter side though I have come away with all the latest TomTom maps, including Eastern Europe, but sadly not Australia, Hong Kong or Singapore.

Did you get any information about when the upgrade programme for Navigator 5 is to be announced?

They're busy in final testing of the upgrade release. Assuming this goes to plan then the programme should be announced shortly, certainly May sometime.

I wasn't aware of this or I would have grilled them on it. Certainly you shouldn't have your credit cards debited until the order is actually shipped. Can you confirm that your accounts have been debited and I will take this matter up with TomTom.

Yes I can confirm the money has been debited from my account, It came out almost instantly. Strange this is that according to tomtoms own guide my status should now say captured but it still says authorised which according to them means I have sufficient funds but payment has not been debited. See this link Tomtom's guide
If you could query this I would be very grateful.

OK that link doesn't take you to the page but here it is. Embarassed

Question
How to check the status of your order?
Answer
On the left hand side of your screen, you see the option “My TomTom”. Click on this and you will be taken to a login screen. If you have not yet registered as a user, you will be asked to do so first. If you are an existing user, you will be asked to enter your user id ( your email address ).

Choose Orders and you will find a list of the orders you placed in the TomTom mail-order store
When you double click the order number you can view all details of that order.

A short explanation of the terms in the details:

Waiting: Your payment has not been received yet
Authorised: Your creditcard has been validated and the payment can take place as there is enough credit on the card.
Captured: The payment has been received
Expired: Your payment has not been paid. We have not received a positive authorization for your order.

I am hoping to wire a gps receiver into the clove box of my car and will be looking for a unit that does not power off when it it not being used.

Please could you confirm if this unit does that or is like the MKI version that does not.

In case you are interested in TTMv5 shipping here is the reply from TT when I questioned why mine has not been sent yet:

'This is a delay in our payment system. Please be patient, for logistical reasons, we estimate a delivery time of 5 weeks. Please check back on your My TomTom account for when your product ships'.

Yep I simply dont understand why they have not offered us a download facility. Would of been cheaper all round and offered TT a simpler method of distribution. This way I will have yet another SD card to gather dust. TTGOv5 was offered as a download why not TTMv5????
