I was chuffed to bits with my NavMan but twice now, I didn't use it for a day or two and turned it back on to discover that everything had gone from it! The entire SmartST prog, all appointments, it was literally as new! I always travel with it on charge but don't then dock it on my computer - I presumed that was optional but not essential to its continued use.

I called Expansys through whom I bought it, but they didn't want to know and gave me NavMan's number. I explained it all to them and they dismissed me in 10 seconds, saying "Yeah, that's what PDAs do. The back-up battery doesn't last very long, you should always have it plugged in to the mains in your house. Nothing we can do, bye."

Surely not! In fact definitely not, coz my brother has exactly the same one and does the same with it and his lasts far longer.

Am I being unreasonable here, or is this just a genuine pitfall of PDAs?

I think you're probably correct but I want to be sure.

It is a pitfall of PDA's that if you let the battery go flat you will lose all but the Operating System from memory.

Ideally you should keep the battery on charge if not using your PDA for an extended period.

Having said that, it should last a day or so. are you sure that the device is properly switched off when not being used? The PiN is a Mio 168 which has the on/off button on the side and can easily be switched on without knowing which if left on overnight will deplete the battery.

I'll admit that my Pin 300 is fairly new so maybe the battery is in good nick, but I have left mine for as much as 10 days without ever charging it and have never lost a thing. IMHO your battery is faulty and if you have bought the Navman recently you would do well to get back on to Expansys and start quoting the sale of goods act at them, if they ignore that try trading standards. Have a look at this first:
