It is definately not directional. It does not care which direction you approach a camera from it will warn.

This tends to be most annoying if you have the setting for sensitivity too high, as it warns you of speed cameras 4 or 5 streets away, although geographically they are withing the 200 yard (or whatever range you set)

Driving home along the M4 I was interested to note it went off approaching J2A, this is becuase there is a camera in Iver Heath which was running parallel.

As the device has no map, it does not know this.

I fiddled around with entering my own locations and this is fun as the Inforad software loads multimap and shows you where you are/where on it.

On the bogie side my four year old broke the lead today by stepping on it! I also realised that it is the lead which contains the electronics to be recognised by the PC.

So connecting the lead cause the "ding-dong" noise of windows, not connecting the inforad. This may explain why it did not register at all at home.

I have emailed Inforad asking how to get a replacement lead.

Having said that the Inforad goes off incorrectly, I have to say that my Origin routinely alerts me to a 60 mph speed camera when I'm on the A14 (70 limit) near Northampton. As it's just under an overpass, I suspect that the Origin doesn't have perfect direction sensitivity either (even though it is supposed to).

Guy at work bought a Road Angel and turned off the directional abilities as it couldn't differentiate between cameras which can be swivelled as on the A40.

He routinely gets falsies (ooh err missus) on motorways from A-roads running adjacent.

I would quite happily pay for a device which showed the speed you were supposed to be going. It might help some of the 40MPH club (you know the guys with hats who drive at 40, whether the limit is 30 or 70)

Origin B2 tells you what speed you're supposed to be doing at the camera location, like the new speed-split PocketGPS database.

No way to tell you the speed limit for any given stretch of road, since no such database exists and would be impossible to maintain anyway.

Got an email back from Inforad today. As the product is so new, they don't have replacement USB leads in the country as yet.

I will get an email when they arrive. They cost £14.99 and are as I suspected 'intelligent' which explains why it was not recognised using any old USB 'b' connector.

I use the Tom Tom Go with the speed split now. I just need to sort the voice file out.

Thanks for all the replies- since my first post there have been two developments- I've upgraded my mobile to a Nokia 3220- it's possibly the most tasteless phone under the sun, and I'm falling in love with it- the question is, would it have the capacity to hold the database and process it with a Java midlet? Secondly, I've been zapped again- 38 in a 30 zone at 08:38 on a Sunday morning. I won't whine too loudly- it just makes it all the more imperative to get some sort of SCD- but does anybody have any sort of idea what sort of insurance loading I'm likely to get? The last time was December 2002.

Well, the 3230 isn't listed as compatible with TomTom Mobile.

Now, granted, full sat-nav is more intensive than monitoring location against database entries, but it's not that far off.

I've had a nosy around, and found something called PowerNavigator which looks like it will provide you with the GPS location functions, and it will run on the 3230.

So yep, looks like its do-able - if not a bit too much like hard work!
