Welcome sir_randall

If you are brave, then you might be able to modify your Mapsource maps using GPSMapEdit from http://www.geopainting.com/en/ and add the Speed Cameras as POIs. Modifying your maps is not a trivial task and I've never actually done it but I am told that it can be done.

If you don't have any maps loaded then you can just create yourself a custom map containing the Speed Camera POIs using GPSMapEdit and load it into your GPS.

The big problem is that there is no proximity warning facility on the Garmin which would handle warnings for 3000 POIs.

Bear in mind that modifying your maps would violate the terms of your license, void your Garmin warranty, cause satellites to rain down from the sky and hit you on the head etc, etc, etc.

One solution would be to extract a subset of camera locations from the database to keep the number down below 500 Idea

At the moment I am developing a program that would let you extract camera sites in an circular area defined by a central location and a radius (in miles). Are you interested?

Cameras within a certain distance of a predefined route would be pretty cool too. :D 8)

Yes, this would be fantastic.
Also the possiblity of showing only along a selected route[ie Ireland [Fishguard FerryPort to Dover]

Not so easy to do it for a route Sad Firstly, you would have to define a route using a series of points, in the order to be followed, and export them. As my program is not linked to a navigation program I would then read the route points, connect them by straight lines and extract POI (safety cameras) that are "close" to those straight line segments. Thus the route will not be following the path of the actual roads. But I suppose that you will say that it is still useful.

It would be helpful then, to be able to have the ablity to have speed cameras selected within a given radius [10miles] along a general straight line route.
Would that be possible?
I have converted your Database for use with Garmin Mapsource. Could I make that available [.mps or /gpx] to you and other users?

Sure it would!

Garmin appears to create routes as a series of linked waypoints with a waypoint at every turn prompt, I imagine other route formats are similar.

You could include any camera within (say) 10 miles of the route which would deal with twists and turns in the road. Yes, that would include a lot of off route cameras but it still cuts down on the number of POIs. And who's to say that the driver won't end up taking a bit of a detour anyway.

Or you could create some sort of clever algorithm to determine the catchment distance around the staight line route based on the distance between route points.

For example, in a built-up area the the route points will probably be <1 mile apart, so include any camera within 1 mile of the route.

On a dual carriageway, the turn points might be 20 miles apart so include any camera within 5 miles of the straight line route.

It's a bit academic with Garmin GPS units though, because they can't do proximity warnings for more than about 10 POIs...

I have 2800 waypoints/Camera locations with proximity alarms [set at 800m] on my Garmin.

I didn't think that was possible. :o

Did you just edit the text version of the waypoints file and set the proximity field?

What GPS do you have?

I created a Mapsource File from the database.
Saved as .mps file or .gpx file.
Selected areas that I may never visit and deleted and resaved 'my speed camera corridor'!!
Transferred/imported into PalmDesktop and then HotSync to Garmin iQue 3600.
Using iQue specific software 'wayQue' [it hides the 3000waypoints from view so as not to slow up the memory]
Then using iQue specific software 'Birdwatch' it alerts me with audible warning at 800m [can be set to your pref.] and with a touch of one button I can see if the 'limit' is 30, 40,50 etc.

I have just posted POIGrouper v1.00 in the Programs area on my website http://rjdavies.users.btopenworld.com

It will enable you to extract POI in a circular zone from a set of POI files, eg. pocketgps_uk_gatso.ov2, pocketgps_uk_mobile.ov2, and write them to another file. My POIConverter program can be used to convert the output files, either OV2 or CSV, to other formats.

Thank you.
It works well.
I selected three centre points with 55mile radius to cover my 'corridor' - Fishguard to Dover and the New Forest. It reduced the database to 2600 locations!

Question Hi Strumble-:
Wow! That sounds awesome! Is this file available to other individuals or the instructions on how to do it? I would be very interested in having a speed camera database on my IQue 3600 now that I have it working properly.

8) More interestingly instead of a speed camera data base, wouldn't it be nice if a road speed data base was available i.e. showing the legal road speed as an icon in say, top right of the screen? With an audible adjustable warning if you accidentally strayed over? Obviously this would be easier to implement at a software development stage but it would ensure that even mobile cameras never caught you out

There is a specialised Forum for the iQue:-
http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=108

Do not post questions there without 'searching' on that forum first.
They are very helpful.
You need from that Forum:-wayQue and Birdwatch before the Speedcamera data base will work properly for you.

Without that forum the iQue will only reach 30% of its potential!
If you wish, from that forum send me a Private Message and I may be able to help 'off view'.
