Problems getting TTN Traffic to set up GPRS session

Being new to all this I hope this is not a stupid question but here goes...

I have TTN3.07 with the Traffic service. I have set up a Bluetooth relationship between my IPAQ (H5550 running Pocket PC 2003) and Sony-Ericsson P900 mobile and I am able to instigate a successful GPRS session using the dial up short cut I created using the Bluetooth Manager application in the IPAQ.

However, if I start up TTN and then request a traffic update from within TTN, the IPAQ attempts to make a connection to the phone over Bluetooth but just locks up. Also, if I start up TTN (following a soft reset after the above attempt!) and then use the Bluetooth Manager (P900 dial up connection shortcut) in the IPAQ to try and establish a connection this also fails with the same result.

On the other hand, if I use the Bluetooth Manager to establish a GPRS session before I start up TTN then this DOES establish a connection. I can then start up TTN and if I then request a traffic update this is successful.

Surely I should be able to simply request an traffic update from within TTN and (provided both devices have active Bluetooth sessions running) this should automatically establish a GPRS connection over a Bluetooth connection with my P900 phone - any ideas of what I might be doing wrong or is this a bug with TTN

I never got Traffic to autodial correctly on my iPAQ h3970 (which was upgraded to Pocket PC 2003). However, the failure was different to that you described - there was no attempt made to dial a GPRS connection. Other software, such as Pocket Internet Explorer, dialled out correctly 'on demand' - do you find this is the case with your h5550?

I do have autodialling working correctly with Traffic on my iPAQ hx4700, which runs Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition.


I suspect this may be an operating system or Bluetooth stack thing that just has to be lived with. Make sure there's no Bluetooth or ROM updates outstanding for your h5550 before giving up, though. HP are not going to issue WM2003SE upgrades for any iPAQs not shipped with WM2003SE.

Hi David,

Yes, all other applications will dial out fine.

I will check for any HP BT or ROM updates.

In meantime I have deleted all BT relationships and re-defined them and after a soft restart I can get TTN (ver 3.07T) to dial up traffic updates OK. Unfortunately it seems that when I then close TTN the next time I reopen it I am back to not being able to complete the dial up from within TTN(unless I do a soft restart first)

As you say - maybe its just something I just have to get used to.

PS I notice that after I close TTN I am still left with the GPS symbol (albeit greyed out) down in bottom right hand corner of IPAQ screen. After a soft restart this goes away. Any connection do you think between the 2 "faults"? I'm still running 3.03 GPS - should I upgrade to 3.07??

Sometimes TomTom GPS doesn't shut down - that's not the problem here, though.


I wonder if your phone could be the problem. It's worth trying a different phone if you can get your hands on one - or checking if there's any firmware upgrades available for the phone.

Apart from that, if there's no updates for the iPAQ, I think you're stuck with the behaviour as it is.
