iCN630 versus TT Go

Anyone here with both iCN630 & TomTom Go?

I would like to know which is better?

lack of touch screen and no way to do re-route while in a route .. and these are avilable on the TT Go.

Hi,

I don't have a TomTom Go, but I know someone who used one.

I believe that they both use the same map provider, so there should be no difference with the detail etc.

So the only thing that is different is the touch screen and routing.

Touch screens I don't like (Personal preference!) but the cursor on the iCN630 is very good and is fast enough most of the time.

The new iCN's may be better - remote controls being available, plus the new V3 software may well mean the routing differences are small or none existant.

So, in short, I guess you buy whatever you prefer!

On the other hand...

I found the NavMan iCN difficult to input data. I couldnt get used to the cursor, and far prefer the touch screen.

The NavMan does have a better mechanism for stitching map segments together, you just load up the sections you want and the iCN just see it all as a seamless map. With TomTom GO you have to stop and swap maps when you move from one area to another, and you cannot create a route across map boundaries.

I don't know where I can go look at the TomTom Go in person (USA - Eastcoast).

I don't like the cursor simply because it takes too long to enter a address, touchscreen sure speed up the input process.

I like the user interface that I read from the review of TT Go here, however I didn't know that this seamless map stitching problem in TT.

After reading both's comment, I should wait for the newer models to come, and perhaps choose the touchscreen (this is personal preference) w/ V3 software.

The way TomTom stitches the maps is not really a problem in the USA. With the American version of the maps there are a number of options from single state to large combinations of states and even a "Major Roads" map so you can always have the right maps on the evice, it is only when you move from one area to another that this becomes an issue.

And even than it is not too big a problem. Consider driving from Boston to Seattle you would only be interested in the main roads between the two cities, but street level info at departure and destination. So you would have the state maps for the departure and destination, plus the major roads.

Continuing the theme of differences between TTG and Navman, I know the TTG uses Linux as its OS which is obviously more stable than Windows. Does anyone know what the OS for the Navman ICN 510 will be?

The 510 will be running WM2003, and as it appears to run in Landscape mode, I'd say WM2003 SE is a possibility.

Yes, it's Windows Mobile. As for stability, it's Windows.....Having said that, I haven't even seen SE running on anything.

Finally, got to see the TT Go in person.

I realized something, the touch screen is not all that useful. only thing I found was that I can input and nagivate around much faster than cursor pad.

However, since it mounts to windsheild... it's depends on you and your car, it's still can't be reached to do the input ..

and like everyone else here said, it's really a personal perference.

now, I think a remote might actaully be a great idea.. (except that iCN630 is not capable of this). OR maybe a custom mount that mounts devices to the center console like below or above your stereo).
