Darren, Fair enough
More important things. Let's assume that TomTom is released soon with C500 support.
Which to go for? Co-Pilot Live for smartphone or Tomtom? Co-Pilot was announced at £299 but expansys are selling it for £219 and Tomtom was announced at £199 but I have seen it for £189 (both include software and their own bespoke bluetooth GPS receivers). Any advice?
Will the receivers work with anything or are they locked to their particular applications?
Grateful for any thoughts. I am a novice with this and cannot decide which (I don't need speed camera POIs as I have a B". hang-on can I use the NMEA o/p from B2 to C500? Don't even start..... ) |

It's an impossible question to answer. Both are excellent ports to the smartphone platform, both promise Traffic Support in future updates.
My personal summary of the two products is:
TomTom
Uses TeleAtlas Map data (M6 toll is In!) so poor NI and Eire coverage.
Has full support for custom POIs and can immediately utilise the huge user base of TT POI's, it also has built-in POI Alert functionality with alams.
The screen layout is identical to TT Palm and as such some of the data e.g. ETA, Distance to destination etc is very small and almost impossible to read when in a holder on a car dash.
The menu structure is simple, intuitive and easy to operate using the joystick and keypad. The standard Smartphone interface is not used, instead TT have created a keypad operated menu with Icons.
Currently only available with the TT BT GPS though this may well change as support for other GPS types can be seen in the registry on our pre-release version.
CoPilot
Uses Navteq Map Data (M6 Toll is In!) so better Ni and Eire coverage.
Has some support for custom POIs but it requires some work, no alert functionality.
[Ed-Dave] - Alert functionality including Speed Camera alerts do work on the SmartPhone edition of CoPilot
Layout has been re-designed and screens are optimised to take full advantage of the smaller screen real estate, unnecessary information has been removed and you are presented with clear information and map displays that can be easily read from a distance. This works superbly.
Menu structure is simple although not as intuitive as it could be. Address input is quick and easy.
Available as a software only package so existing owners can utilise any BT GPS or GPS Mice/Serial GPS that can be hooked up to the interface (E200's use the XDAII interface).
Common
Voice instructions are very loud as Smartphones have Speakerphone support as standard.
The supplied BT GPS units are not locked to the software and can be used with other GPS packages both on the Smartphone and other devices e.g. PocketPC, PalmOS.
I really can't seperate these two, they both do a great job and excel indifferent areas. In the end it may come down to a personal preference for Navteq or TeleAtlas maps, and of course price. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Slightly off topic but relevant...
I want to buy Tom Tom mobile after seeing it at the Stratford meet, but I need a car kit for the SPV 200 that will at least power the phone, without external power the bluetooth will kill it in hours. Can anyone suggest an option please?
I have hunted everywhere & the closest I got was "Mr Handsfree" who state an interface cable is available but know one knows which one. Do all the XDA 2 extras fit?
Thanks in anticipation

MalT,
If you register with www.coolsmartphone.com and then goto cheap accessories on the left you can get a working charger there.
Not all XDA accessories work with the E200 be careful |

Is this confirmed as
Expansys wrote: | Point of Interest and speed camera alerts. CoPilot Live tells you about POIs as you approach them. If you import the UK speed camera database, CoPilot Live will warn you as you approach each. |
As I currently have a BT GPS and C500 CoPilot was going to be my choice but this issue may blur my choosing
thanks |

Question e-mailed to tomtom
If I use the tomtom mobile with the bluetooth receiver on a Nokia 6600 can I use my Bluetooth headset at the same time to receive and make calls, I have been advised that only one bluetooth device can be used with this phone at one time.
Answered within 24 hours:
The Nokia 6600 has just one bluebooth access, you will be able to use only one device at the time : either the bluetooth receiver or the bluetooth headset.
That's one of the limits of Tomtom Mobile.
We hope to have answered your question to your satisfaction.
With best regards, |

I use Route 66 Mobile Britain 2005 on my Nokia 6600. It comes with a GPS receiver but I think you can get the software (256 MMC) only version from the route 66 website shop.
Works very well with the latest 1.04 sw update. Includes a subscription free GPRS traffic update service. The package is now about £199 inc VAT. |

I'm just wondering if someone with a P800/P900 could try something???
I'm hoping the software will actually work on the UIQ platform but they ship an MMC card. Do you think its possible to copy the MMC to a Memory Stick Duo and it would work? |

Thanks for the advice on the chargers but I really want a "proper car kit". I have ordered the TTM software & I am now attempting to rewire the SPV charger plug into my old P800 car kit, if you hear a loud BANG from Birmingham my wife will be rich & the mod didn't work:) |

MalT,
Simple car kit http://www.shop.smartphoneaddons.com/product_info.php?products_id=64
There is a bluetooth car kit (called Parrot) which works and is wired in (I believe)
Or
DIY. Get a 2.5mm adapter to phone and input that into your stereos aux input. Also a remote mike. Costs about £20. If you don't have a aux input get a adapter to allow it to be played through your cassette (maplins have them). |

All you need to do is to copy the OV2 and BMP files into the Great-Britain-Map directory then go through the configuration options as described in the GO article (the interface works exactly the same) Click here for the article. _________________ Mike Barrett |

Bang on..... Thanks very much;)) I just couldn't see for looking.
Now I am really impressed with the software! Do you know if there are any plans for the GPS Assist etc to release versions for Smartphone now the program is availble on that format.
Thanks again

Unfortunately the answer is no at the moment. TomTom have not opened up the new software (Palm, GO and Mobile) for third party developers yet. Hopefully this will be something for the future. Then we can see the likes of CheckPoint and GPSAssist adding valuse to the package. _________________ Mike Barrett |
