At last something that will eliminate the need to stick an unsightly plastic bag over my iPaq whenever it looks like rain.

http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/john-childs.php

I'm not sure about including a bluetooth headset as standard though. Although some will find it the answer to their prayers I think that many sports bike riders do not want the distraction of satnav and are mainly interested in getting their knee down on twisty roads without worrying too much about where that road goes. TomTom Rider is more likely to appeal to the Tourer riders and many of us will already have headsets in our helmets coupled to intercom systems from the likes of Autocom or Starcom.

In my own case for instance, I already get a rider/passenger intercom, CD player, iPod, two way PMR radio, and TomTom instructions from my iPaq into my helmet and although it would be nice to do without the cable I can't see a satisfactory way of using that lot with bluetooth.

I will probably buy one anyway but the headset is likely to languish in the bottom of a desk drawer and never get used so I would have thought a better plan would be to offer a basic Rider with the bluetooth headset as an extra cost option.

Of course, the big question is, and I can't find any reference to it here or on the TomTom website, will the Rider have a 3.5mm audio out socket so that the likes of me can plug it into our existing set-up?

Also of interest is whether Maps of Western Europe and Maps of the US will be available on SD card. Again, it is not much use if street level mapping is restricted to the UK.

Those are my initial observations but no doubt others will occur to me later when I have given it a bit more thought.

Finally, if a road tester is needed............

I am inclined to agree about touring riders not finding much value in the BT headset (being setup with intercoms etc), but your comment about sports riders is a bit of a generalisation! Confused

Satnav is a godsend to any recreational biker. Plan a ride in advance, include some interesting looking roads and scenic areas and ride without getting lost or missing something interesting. 8)

Fair comment Skippy. It is a bit of a generalisation but was based on those bikers of my acquaintance which, admittedly, is a small part of the whole.

I agree that satnav is a boon to bikers, not only recreational but more especially to professionals, but my point is that those that want it will mostly already have it and need to integrate it into their existing set-up. That's certainly true in my circle of friends anyway.

My Sprint ST is a Sports Tourer and while my riding style is far more tourer than sports, I haven't got an Intercom, CD, MD PMR or anything else on my bike. I think the BT comms is a cracking idea.

I agree.

Whilst I ride a Deauville (read "Dullville"), I have no intercomms as only I ride it.

I just use a walkman for music, so have no bike-based headset either.

I will have to take a look at this one - Sounds interesting.

It isn't what you ride, it's IF you ride. :D

Oi !!!!!!

Cheeky b'stard. Laughing

I ride every day - Hence the workhorse bike, rather than a sports bike.

Just 'cos you might get your knee on the floor every now and then doesn't make me any less of a rider - or maybe it does ?????

That'll teach me to buy a "real" bike in future

You misunderstand. I mean "It doesn't matter what bike you ride, it's the fact that you ride that counts". :o

And the only time I've ever got my knee on the floor is when I've fallen off! Embarassed

Sorry mate, I misunderstood.

I've taken so much stick from biking work-mates that I've become a bit paranoid and over-protective of my Deauville.

As to falling off, don't be too hard on yourself - I did it once, VERY embarassingly.......

*whispers* I left the disk-lock on my front wheel - Got about 4 yards and very slowly fell over sideways - IN THE MIDDLE OF BLOODY LIVERPOOL !!!!!!!!!!

How embarassed was I ????

I just wanted to crawl under my bike and disappear.

Anyway. Back to the subject. I really want to get a good look at this, because I've never found a BlueTooth that would fit comfortably under my helmet, so this may be worth getting.

OK. It's just me then

Nobody else in the whole world uses an intercom system.

Forget I ever raised the subject.

Test rider # 5 taking a number!

I'm currently running TTN3 on A Tosh e330 (wired) in the car. I've been thinking about how I might get this fitted to the bike but it could be a real ball-ache.

The TT Rider looks like a much more self-contained option. I also like the fact that it's battery powered. I think pricing will probably be the decider.

That looks great to me. I found using my ipaq and bluetooth receiver on the bike was useful, but I can't see a thing throu my tankbag cover if it's bright and sunny.

I would use the bluetooth head set, but have to admit I'm looking for bike to bike comms now the missus has learnt, so this might get confusing. I can also imagine my missus trying to over-rule the tomtom: 'right here? are you sure?; I think we should carry on a bit further; lets stop and ask someone...' etc etc
