Whenever I approach J3 of the M40 (High Wycombe) driving westwards, I get warned of a 30 mph limit that's quite far from the motorway (GATSO 857@30 on the A4094 in Wooburn Green). Is there anything I can do to stop that happening?

In the settings you can adjust the warning distance as well as the various detection angles.

Personally I have the warnings distance set to 30 seconds (40 for mobiles) and reduce the other options for angle/cone/sensitivity etc down by 5 from the default.

I find that stops most false-positives for me.

I will, however, look at the cameras in question to see if I can tweak the heading on it to reduce the likelihood

I imagine the cure would be worse than the problem.

I'm no good at sums, so I'll use an easy example. At 60mph the 30 seconds warning distance is half a mile, so even further at 70mph on the motorway. Any camera on a nearby road within that reach will warn - to cure it you have to reduce the distance (seconds) which is very undesireable for all the other cameras. I don't think that camera can be reduced for the angle of heading. I have long accepted this minor irritation - at least two such on the M4 going into London. You just have to try and remember you're on a motorway so a 30 or 40mph camera won't be true.

Dennis is spot on.

I always used to reckon that my old Talex was spot on with warning distances. After many years of use I knew exactly where the warnings would appear on my commute.

When Talex was no more I used a Garmin with PGPSW and I found that the Talex warnings were 14 seconds for first warning and 6 seconds for a subsequent warning if you were still 'giving it some'.

I've had almost no false warnings with these distances and certainly no need to brake, just ease off the throttle.

With Garmins default 36 seconds you often get the warning well before you see the camera and you could forget the warning and speed up.
