I've just seen a Garmin DS 55 MT-D EU on offer at Halfords for £149.99, which looks like a good offer. However, I'm concerned about how the traffic works as I'm not familiar with the Garmin options.

This one has traffic via a cable and doesn't seem to need a smartphone app. But the Garmin website says that "the Garmin Digital Traffic service for the United Kingdom will cease to exist as from 30th June 2021"...

I wonder if this is why it's on offer as it won't get traffic after next year?

Can anyone explain the situation to me?

Thanks.

Sorry... I was looking for info on the DS55 itself and couldn’t find anything specific. Didn’t think to look for that topic. All looks rather bleak and I think I’ll be giving the offer a miss.

It does look like it will work with the Drive app but that doesn’t get brilliant reviews.

Bear in mind most people who post reviews do so because they've had a negative experience. I've read many reviews in the past where the negativity is simply due to folks not understanding how devices are meant to work, and this across all electronic devices, not just satnavs

Best one I saw was on trip advisor, someone complaining that the path to Ben Nevis was too steep and there was no cafe or anything at the top Laughing

Well, I suppose my original question boils down to "is this a good deal or not?".

I'm thinking not because it seems to be a discontinued model. It's not on the Garmin web site, as far as I can see.

Garmin and its resellers are probably offloading all the -D models because of the upcoming discontinuation of the digital traffic. If you think it's a good discount then it's a good deal, and, after digital finishes you can still use Smartlink traffic.

I'm currently still testing Smartlink and so far, back to back, it's still pants IMO. Smartlink seems to be about 15 mins behind Inrix displaying problems and considerably longer removing problems when the road is clear.

My main gripe though is that I often have to manually mess about connecting bluetooth because it fails on first power up. My phone connects 100% to the car but not to my 2599. I'm wondering whether there is too much going on and I need to delay the 2599 power up.
