I was amazed recently at just how many cameras exist in Italy. As one point on the coastal road between Pisa and the French border there were 4 cameras in the space of two minutes drive.

Overall it felt like I was seeing a camera every 5-10 minutes between Turin and Venice/Rimini when not taking the toll motorways.

Does anyone know how active these are and what the margin of error is generally allowed?

What was particularly confusing is the speed limit changed but without signs in many instances. You had to rely on guesswork, other drivers and what the satnav was saying as the speed limit. But many times the satnav said (e.g.) 56mph but a sign was 70kph = (43mph).

No wonder I had a headache!!

I was pretty gobsmacked at the zillions of unverified cams when I had a look at Italy on the verifiers' map. In fact only 1,669 need verifying.

Only 1,669?

I passed about that number alone and just in north Italy.

The cameras were very weird. Drivers only seemed to slow down when passing them and when behind, seldom worrying as they approached them.

They had maybe A4 sized screen when approaching and likewise when beyond.

But at 90 degrees to the road/car were two smaller glass screens. I had no idea what they were for??

And around the west coast were LOADS of these cameras....
