In an attempt to reduce traffic related fatalities and injuries, Spain have recently introduced a reduced speed limit of 90km/h on all roads which were previously 100km/h.

The speed limits are already enforceable although there is apparently 1 month for the authorities to correct the road signage.

So, is this ALL cameras at 100 go down to 90 or is it like the French ones where it depended on the number of lanes and the presence of a central reservation etc?

The 2nd article is confusing. So it's reduced to 90 on a 'conventional highway' but to 100 on a 'regular highway'

I was hoping this would be a simple database update of 'if 100, change to 90' but looks like I'll have to go through every single camera manually like with France to see if it's a regular or conventional highway - any ideas how to tell the difference just from looking at Streetview, satellite view or the map?!

From what I understand, ALL carriageways without a central reservation are now 90km/h.

Carriageways with a central reservation are also reduced to 90km/h UNLESS the owner (either the State or presumably the local council/government) decree it a 100km/h.

I suggest that it would be safer all round, at least until the dust settles and/or you start getting some corrections submitted, if all 100's were changed to 90's.

Locals that I have been talking to about this say that they shall be passing the cameras at 90 until it has been confirmed that all the speed signs have been corrected and the posted speed is the actual, permitted road speed.

Interestingly, The third picture on the official DGT webpage (the first link) shows something which I had heard about and never wanted to try as I thought it was an old wives' tale.

If a vehicle in front is driving below the maximum permitted speed and is hindering your progress, you can temporarily exceed the speed limit by 20km/h to effect an over-take - *Velocidad para Adelantar*

Still don't think that I give it a try especially if there is a policeman or camera present.

You'd have to prove that you were only speeding for that part and not all the time - pretty hard to do without video evidence :/ Don't think I'd want to risk it!!

Does this page help? http://n332.es/2019/02/08/when-is-it-not-90/ They are usually pretty helpful people that run the page.

So... This may have to be a manual check of all 100kmh cameras in Spain then to see if it's on a Secondary road (N-xxx / A-xxx)

If it's on a 'motorway' (AP-xxx / E-xxx) then the max would be 120kmh - which I think we already did a blanket change from 130 to 120 some years ago??

Would there be any 100kmh limits that were NOT on secondary roads? I.e. could I actually just change all 100 to 90? Or could there be some actual 100kmh limits on motorways?

Sorry, MaFt. Yes, there are 100's on motorways also. Sad

Have a look here on the Southbound Ap7.

OK, there are 350 100kmh cameras in Spain. This is much less time consuming than the 1200+ 90kmh cameras in France that all needed manually checking...

Right, a few more questions before I make a start on these.

Looking at GATSO:27670

This is on A-44 which is an orange road with the name in a blue rectangle on Google maps.
The A-92 (NW of here) is also an orange A-road but the name is in an orange rectangle.
The A-49 (W of here) is an A-road but is white road with the name in yellow rectangle.
The A-395 (SE of here) is also an orange A-road but the name is in a green rectangle.

They are all A-roads but all have different style naming... Are they all secondary roads or is one of the colours classed as a highway?!

Hi MaFt, sorry but I'm not at a computer until this evening. I'll have a look then if that's OK?

Ahhh! If only it was that simple! Welcome to Spain, Shocked

The area you have chosen is Granada. Granada is in Andalusia, so all the local roads which are managed by Andalusia are prefixed by *A*. Now, don't confuse this *A* of Andalusia with the *A* roads of Aragon or *A* of Alicante or any other autonomous community in Spain which begins with an *A* or the *A* of the state owned AutoPistas or AutoVias.

The AP roads and the A roads in a blue rectangle are the state controlled AutoPistas or Autovias (motorways, tolled or otherwise) which are usually, but not always, 120kmh.

The *A* roads not in a blue rectangle are local roads, which if in Huelva and not in Andalusia would have an *H* prefix or in Madrid would have an *M*., etc. etc .

The state also owns *N* roads. The *N* roads are in a Red rectangle

Generally, roads with a Green, Orange or Yellow rectangle are the locally controlled (Non-state) roads.

It's a mine field.

If it helps, ViaMichelin.com gives a slightly better distinction between road types in my opinion.

BUT - in a nutshell:

APxxx = stay at 100kmh
roads in blue rectangle = keep at 100kmh

Anything else = lower from 100kmh to 90kmh?

Is that right?
