You can link the VIA 135 to your phone too, at least you can to my Samsung Galaxy S6, and use it for hands-free calling and message notification and reading aloud. I would imagine that would also apply to more recent TomToms, but obviously best to check. |
the newer tomtoms don't allow it - i've also got the go 5000 and not been able to do voice calling on that, i've seen some posts it maybe available on some of the other models |

I had a traffic receiver on my 135 cable which came with the unit, it wasn't digital, (RDS/TMC?) but worked very well. _________________ Garmin Drivesmart 51 LMT-D Europe |

TMC compared to Digital is pathetic. Only covers motorways and major A roads and is often 15 to 30 mins out of date. _________________ Satnav:

Not sure I agree with you there, based on my personal experience. Yes the non digital stuff didn't update as quickly and they narrowed the range of it for a time, but I still found it effective. The digital on the other hand, I have learned not to trust it. Non existent traffic reported, traffic not reported until stuck in it with no way out, closed roads/ motorway slips not shown, re- opened roads still showing closed, overnight road closures still showing closed hours after opening.
I rely more on what the overhead gantries say now, they have as much chance of being accurate as my Garmin...
If I feel there are likely to be delays, I run Waze now to keep me out of trouble. _________________ Garmin Drivesmart 51 LMT-D Europe |

The example I always use is the M25 western section.
I used to travel this section (J11 to J15) daily in the evening peak.
TMC would tell me that the back of the queue was junction 15 so theoretically I should be able to get there OK.
Digital would tell me that the queue tail was at junction 12 or 13, almost 10 miles earlier.
Digital was always right.
The A312 bypass is also a traffic bottleneck for Heathrow and worth a miss at times. Digital has it covered, and fairly accurately, TMC doesn't have it covered. _________________ Satnav:

totally different up north :P
there are many times i've been stuck in traffic on A1/M1 or M62 and the Garmin has said no traffic, i've been on main a roads and there has been no traffic and Garmin reports there is traffic.
On most journeys I know and a satnav reports traffic or delays and wants to reroute, I ignore as usually the delay is minimal or changing route just causes further delays. |

Well I've finally plunged for the Garmin DriveSmart 51 LMT-D at £140 at Halfords over the Tom Tom. After demoing the device the salesman said "You've made a good choice, the Wi-Fi updating is a big improvement over the 50 LMT-D model which he uses." His further view that "he ignores the Traffic Announcements unless he can see the delay/accident etc as any indicated detour may well take longer than staying with the delay!" I don't think that I will mention this comment to my partner.
I guess after this post I shall have to move over to the Garmin Forum if I (that is she) has any problems I can't work out how to deal with.
Thanks for all of the posts folks, Brian. |
