Nextbase will immenently release a new dashcam, the 612W.

This latest one is supposed to be the one to beat all others into submission.

It has a 4K lens running at 3840x2160 with 8.5M pixels and will require a minimum 64Gb SD Card to U3 rating.

The 412GW runs at 2560x1440 with 4M pixels
The 402G runs at 1920x1080 with 3M pixels

I'm waiting for some sample footage. It's currently still in testing.

It will be an eye watering £250

Think I'll stick with my 212 which was les than £50, good enough to provide evidence should I ever be involved in an accident, or have one happen in front of me Very Happy

My 312GW cost £84 and the only thing 'wrong' with it as far as I'm concerned is it will only take a 32GB card. (Yes, I know I can stick another in and I have a few, but it's too much bother, so the same card stays in there waiting for an accident).

EDIT to add - I hope they won't indulge in upgrades a la TomTom method (dumb down and remove functionality).

The 312 will take a bigger card.

The 32Gb limit is because larger cards come formatted to ExFAT which isn't compatible. And Windows refuses to format these larger cards to FAT or FAT32.

I formatted a 64Gb card to FAT using EaseUS Partition Manager and that card worked perfectly in my 402G giving me up to 8hrs.

The one thing to watch is that you do need a good quality card I used a Samsung Ultra advertised as OK for video use.

No idea with a Mac, sorry.

I've just ordered one of these for my 412GW:

https://www.scan.co.uk/products/128gb-samsung-evo-plus-microsdxc-memory-card-class-10-uhs-i-class-3-u3-100mb-s-read-90mb-s-write-ada

As long as the card can write at over 48mbps then it's fine for dash cams.

Dennis, good news.

The 312 with the latest firmware can now accept cards up to 128Gb as well:

No need to fancy format first. Works straight out of the box.

Looking at 7DayShop for what seems to be the exact same card, price is similar, possibly cheaper with postage costs, but they show spec as read/write 80/20MBs, but yours says 100/90MBs

https://www.7dayshop.com/products/samsung-evo-plus-micro-sd-sdxc-memory-card-uhs-1-class-10-with-adapter-128gb-mc128ga/eu

Yours faithfully, Confused of Keynsham???

You can also get the same card on Amazon but when I looked at the supplier, based in HK I looked up UK genuine suppliers on the Samsung UK site.

There are lots of SD copies around.

Depending on your needs maybe a 64Gb might be sufficient and they are cheap now.

Watch out for the rating, U3 is the one to go for but some are only U1 which are slower.

Great. I got the download software update to allow bigger cards, went out to the van and put the card into the camera, but not quite. The spring sprung it out so sharply that it sprang across the van and now I can't find it. New technology GRRRR.

I use the SD Memory Card Formatter software (Windows and Mac) by the SD Association. Thumbs Up

I prefer to use the RoadHawk HD-2 (£100 for a refurbished one from RoadHawk on eBay), which takes normal sized SD cards. Like Dennis, I've found Micro SD cards tend to get launched by the spring when you eject them and it is sometimes hard to find them!

The RoadHawk HD-2 records in HD which is high enough really and at highest bitrate a 64 GB card can take about 9 hours before starting to get over written. Plus the RoadHawk HD-2 has HDR which is essential for optimising daytime and nighttime driving.

Regards,

Last months Which? magazine had a DashCam feature/test.

Nextbase took all 4 top spots, in order:

512
212
312
412

Sorry P, the Roadhawk HD2 came out as a 'don't buy' due to video quality, day, night and movement, and installation.

2 !

You done it again Confused

Those micro sd's are a pain. I put mine in indoors, with the aid of a small blunt screwdriver. Once in, job done.
