I have been looking for a solution to the trouble with the Merc Sat Nav (Garmin based). And considered replacing my dash cam with one that has speed cams as a feature. Unfortunately the RAC version that uses the PGPSW database is by all accounts utter garbage.

I also looked at the combined Garmin nav unit and camera, but its way to big for my liking, I don't like clutter.

Garmin have just released the new Dash Cam 55, it is getting excellent reviews and seems right up my street. It uses their Cyclops database loaded via Garmin Express. Does anyone know if this could potentially open the door to being able to load the far superior PGPSW database on it instead? Or has anyone got one and can share their views on it?

Thanks.

If this is in the wrong place, please move or advise, I didn't know which sub forum was best to use for this.
:-)

You're right to exclude the Garmin DriveAssist. I had one for 24hrs and took it back.

Because the camera is in the centre the ball socket is on an edge. Any uneven road caused it to vibrate so the footage was blurred.

I wonder if that cam just takes any GPI as you hope ?

This is my thinking mate. As you well know, I have certainly tried to get my Merc to a point where it is reliable! Laughing

Having decided that I don't think it is likely to happen anytime soon, and being as I must have a dash cam anyway under the terms of my company policy, this would be a good fit.
If at some point the Merc system is made usable, then I have lost nothing.

I am not familiar with Garmin Express, is it similar to POILoader?
I may invest anyway just on the off chance, I need to replace my current dash cam anyway so I might as well give it a shot. At worst, I have to use Cyclops.

Express is a program that updates maps and software and now Garmins safety cameras.

Thank you.
Would be interesting to get one and see if you can get to the file system.

Well.
Got a Garmin 55 for xmas.
I can tell you that it has full custom POI support out the box!
Just download the database, load it onto the camera and away you go. No image files are required as the display is standard.

You get an audible alert, and the screen displays the type, distance, and speed limit of the camera, plus your current speed. Should you exceed the speed limit, the display goes red and you get constant alerts.

My only slight gripe, is that its 'range' is far too wide all around you, so you do get hits from cameras up to .3 of a mile away on adjoining roads.
but for me this doesn't detract from the camera, andI will see if I can tweak it somehow to reduce this.

Very Happy

I don't know the in's and out's of that unit but if it accepts .GPI file then my Converter may help reduce that '36 second' advance warning, which I also find far too much.

Talex had it right with 15 seconds.

Is this the camera trap speed or the road speed limit that you are talking about?
