New average speed cameras have just been activated on the A1 in Lincolnshire. The point-to-point cameras, paid for by Highways England, cover a stretch on the A1 at Ponton, near Stoke Rochford.

Running costs and maintenance are being covered by Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership.

The two static cameras that were originally installed on the road in 1998 have been replaced by eight cameras monitoring both directions.

It's claimed that the old cameras saw a reduction in the annual average of fatalities or serious injuries from 3.1 to 2.1.

Looking like average speed is the way forward.

It is certainly better/safer than Gatso spot checks.

True

Specs cameras are mounted high up and have a small rear facing profile and can easily be missed. Especially as it's only the side of them that are yellow. Gatso's are usually low down big yellow boxes and are easily spotted and therefore avoided by the brake pedal.

My guess is that Specs are a better money earner hence why funding for their installation seems to be forthcoming.

Kremmen, the Specs cameras are on huge yellow posts, how can you miss them?

You get a warning they are there, then you see them, if you hit the first cam at +10 then slow down to -5 for twice the time you were speeding - job done. Try that with a Gatso and collect your brown envelope.

Easily. They are not always on huge yellow posts and are sometimes on the back of gantries. K, show him the video.

If you are aware then they do stick out. The ones round here are on black poles and the only yellow bit is the camera itself which is probably 5 times higher than a Gatso and a quarter of the size.

That set M8 is referring to are on the A316 where some are hidden behind a solid gantry.
