My tomtom GO 910 looks to be on it's last legs, so looking for a good new unit.
I've had the current one probably a decade so I am out of touch.

As well as using it for normal navigation, I need it to be able to be used with my Geocaching POIs, that I currently upload with a tool called GSAK. I can then see geocaches on my route come up on screen like a normal POI.

Good mapping of course, and good interface.
I notice some Garmin ones offer free lifetime map updates, that sounds very attractive.

I found this site:
http://worldofreviews.co.uk/best-sat-nav-navigation/

rating the Garmin nuvi 2595 LMT as the best, and Amazon is telling me the Garmin nuvi 2597LMT as it's replacement. Is this a good unit meeting my requirements?
Seems very well priced. I think my GO 910 was £500!!

Hi tenchy, in your situation, if I were looking for an alternative to a car pnd and a geocashing satnav all-in-one, I'd seriously look at getting a non-branded 5" or 6" Android phone from China via the internet. Install the TT GO app, the CamerAlert app from here and the app available from your favourite geocashing provider. Also buy an external, micro usb battery pack to take with you while geocashing.

I'm sure that there are some Garmin devices that could fulfill the same roll. Hopefully a Garmin user with more knowledge than I shall pass by soon.

Does this help to get Google Play?

http://www.androidapksfree.com/apk/google-play-store-apk-latest-version-download/

I guess only if you already have an unpacker/installer. Sad

EDITED to add, but then I found this -

http://www.apk4fun.com/apk/43374/

EDITED yet again. Iḿ going daft! If you log into the google account your device is linked to, you can purchase the TT Go app from GooglePlay on your computer and have the app sent to your tablet/phone.

I don't think you need GooglePlay if you download the apk file of an app and install it directly on your device.
I'm running several apps which are not supported by Google and not found in their play store.
And the Google Play equivalent on a computer is just your Google account/web page from where you send apps directly to your linked device for installing. Again,I don't think that Google Play is needed for this either.
Or am I missing something really obvious?

He's got a 2599 now Very Happy

Personally I think using a phone as a GPS navigation device isn't good for it long term. I used mine a while ago and at the end of a 20 mile journey it was very hot. That could have been because metal devices don't disipate the heat as good as plastic ones.

I had Cameralert lock up on it regularly after half an hour and the HTC One was again very hot and hotter than I would have assumed normal. In normal operation it's fine

Seems unlikely as most metals conduct heat much better than most plastics.

Not according to a few articles I found when I was looking up why Cameralert kept locking up at about half an hours use.
