I have some custom POI's which I made on my TomTom. I have now gone to Garmin and have converted them to csv files, using a online converter. I am coming up against some issues though and am not sure if it is corruption or added by the converter. I am seeing the following entries when opening in Notepad:

1.70118,57.472,"A"
-6.73973 , 50.41807,"A"
-1.57843 , 53.40815,"A"
-6.73973 , 50.41807,"A"
-2.71438 , 53.40815,"A"
-6.73973 , 50.41807,"A"
-3.3722 , 53.40815,"A"
-6.73973 , 50.41807,"A"
-3.013 , 53.40769,"A"
-3.3722 , 50.41807,"A"

There are quite a few of these similar entries throughout the file. Putting the co- ordinates into Google Maps shows the locations to all be around the Seychelles/ Mogadishu area. So I know these files aren't put there by me, am I right to think I can just delete all of these? Would love to know where the entries have all come from!!

Thanks

Mark

Might the lat/long be reversed?

Could be, but i'm not very techie when it comes to things like this Embarassed . I was just trying that when your reply came in, but I have still found locations in the North Sea and the middle of the English Channel!! Very confusing as I know I have never had my satnav in those areas to mark the location. Am also trying to use Streetview to locate these places, some very strange places coming up!!

I believe it was the online converter that was causing the issues. I have found that POIEditor will convert from ov2 to csv, despite being really old software Very Happy

So, one last question, how do I translate the co- ordinates N 52°30.802' W 001°52.343 into the format in the post above please?

Is it as simple as 52.30802, 1.52343?

Thanks

Mark

Sorry to keep going on, but I am getting confused now. The co- ordinates I gave above were saved in my Garmin as a My Favourite. I saved them whilst on site, with full satellite reception. My Garmin reports the saved location as N 52°30.802' W 001°52.343. If I put those on Google Maps and change lat/ long +/- around, the location varies between Leamington Spa and Lowestoft.

If I go to Google Maps and look for the place the actual destination is, it is shown as 52.512635, -1.872051. Vey confused as to why my Garmin and Google fail to agree. Confused

They do agree but in a different way. I can't remember which does which but one of them uses the -1 whereas the other uses +1 west as opposed to +1 east taken from the Greenwich starting point.

I fell foul of that recently and sussamb told me off

There are 60 minutes in a degree.

So take the minutes element (eg 30.802) and divide by 60 to get the decimal degrees component (0.513367). Add back the units of degrees (52) and the conversion is done (52.513367 degrees North).

Repeat for the West component. 52.343 minutes, divided by 60 is 0.872383 degrees. Add back the units gives the answer (1.872383 degrees West).
If there isn't a letter for E or W, then a Minus sign is used to denote West ie -1.872383.

Surely + is East and - is West. As per the time zones and internationally agreed co-ordinate system
The Garmin indicated N 52°30.802' W 001°52.343. If I . Which is West of the Greenwich meridian so is a negative number if the W is left off. That location is a shed just off the M6 just north of Birmingham. The other value ( E 001°52.343) is in the North Sea off Lowestoft.

52.512635, -1.872051 is pretty much the same as N 52°30.802' W 001°52.343 expressed as decimal degrees rather than DMS and is still a shed just off the M6 north of Birmingham.

Yes indeed, + is East and - is West.
Just as I said above.

They must be to get the right locations in Google maps. Lat comes first.

Much easier to use this site's DMS to Decimal Coordinates Convertor. Very Happy
