I thought that the speed cameras on the M25 were not legal yet?

i..e. they have never had approval to actually issue fines.

So even though they flash nobody has ever been charged,

The cameras in this news item, HADECS by Redflex have been issued with Home Office Type Approval and are now active and so can be sued legally to levy fines. Until we hear of a driver receiving one we can't confirm if they are actually being used for prosecutions.

Of course they are in our database, e.g. GATSO:161835@variable

Yes - but the cameras previously installed are all 'approved' within the UK - yet could not be used to actually fine people.

Not sure of the difference.

I was driving round the M25 towards Croydon a couple of weeks ago, on the way to Brighton and saw a flash on a gantry on the opposite carriageway.

The cameras were on a little stand, on the side support pylon to the overhead gantry, not actually on the top like the rest of them are. About two thirds of the way up.

A man driving a builder's van will have received a fine a few days later.

I don't understand what you are referring to here? A camera has to be Type Approved before its evidence ken be admissible. Once it has received Type Approval then nothing further is required, they can be installed and operated.

This was a story from about a year ago, that the cameras in Essex & the southern part of thee M25 had not issued a single fine as they had not been approved for use on that part of the motorway.

The ones for roadworks were however issuing fines.

Looking at the picture, which I had not seen when writing the post, I would say that is the very camera I saw, with the hill in the background on the right looking familiar.

I wonder what the Government will do when everyone has lost their licence and is not buying fuel any more? That's a lot of tax disappearing from view. Wink

I had read about these new machines a while ago but I saw these new cameras in operation yesterday whilst travelling on the M25 from Potters bar towards Enfield turnoff, several of them ( not just one set) flashing away and only visible from the other carrageway. They are small, grey ( just as in the photographs) and positioned what looks like behind the gantries / signs, not much if any chance of seeing them. I travelled on that section the day before ( on the anticlockwise side) and was not aware of any speed restrictions being posted, if there were they were not repeated before the gantries...beware.
I too would like to know what tollerance is built in to these machines...hope I dont find out..
I know the old chesnut of " if you dont speed you have nothing to worry about" but think these are very sneaky just the same.
