Hi all,

I've been using a Navigon for a few years now with free traffic updates received from local radio stations.

Its 50/50 whether its b*llsh*t or not an often I gamble on whether to take an alternative route or risk it...

I need to upgrade to whichever satnav'll give me the most up to date reports.....am just as happy with second hand as new and the functions of the satnav itself are much less important than the traffic updates themselves.

Thanks in advance, Si

I've had a Garmin 2508 for around 6 months now. It has digital traffic and so far has been very accurate, details on Garmin traffic here:

I have to say that I have been a happy TomTom user for the last few years, and have found the HD traffic to be (usually) pretty accurate. Occasionally it doesn't pick up on something, but I have found through bitter experience that it usually "knows" where the problems are. I drive a lot (mainly) in central London and around, and use my TT1005 more for traffic alerts than for routing.

That said, I know that others have had problems with the ~45 mile horizon for TT traffic alerts, so that may be an issue for you. I don't really have any experience of this.

Bid and won this (though on eBay not Argos) 'as new' :

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1848759.htm#pdpFullProductInformation

I won at a total of £87.......I just checked with Garmin and I can register the device to ME by e mailing so I can get the lifetime free maps...seems a good deal?

This is slightly different to what they have on their web site as it offers the maps for life so I guess it was a special offer???

Ta all, Si

Good price, you can add lifetime maps easily enough ... through Amazon they're around £50 and you get whole of Europe for that Wink

I've been an avid traffic watcher for many years. My first venture was around the millennium when I got a RAC monitor, the 1490 I think.
That was quite useful once you learnt how to interpret the lights.

After that I went through various Trafficmaster units which I found quite good if you accepted their circa 10 mile limitations. Plus you needed to be on a road with broadcasting beacons.

For a short while I ran a Trafficmaster Freeway then Oracle then a Q-Busta unit against the TMC RDS network and soon found that RDS is fairly useless and out of date on some roads (M25 western section in the evening is a prime example).

I found that the delay from actual traffic to the RDS unit was unacceptable. The Q-Busta would warn of traffic back to J13 but RDS still showed the back of the traffic at J15. That is about a 6 mile difference and 99% of the time the Q-Busta was right.
I've since looked at published statistics and what RDS delivers can be as much as 15 to 30 minutes out of date. This is the delay from traffic to Trafficmaster, from Trafficmaster to radio stations then radio stations to the air.

I'm now running a Garmin 2597 with Smartlink traffic and that is as up to date as it needs to be. It can show actual traffic on the M25 well before RDS displays it so job done.
The Garmin also displays accurate traffic on roads that RDS doesn't even know about as it only covers motorways and major A roads.

I imagine TT traffic is just as up to date and is the way to go if you need up to date reports.

Many thanks,

The eBay fell thru anyways as he 'found a scratch on it' loosely translated as he sold it to someone else for more money privately!!!

May go with this as it has lifetime maps (is that a GOOD thing or simply a selling tool???):

Si

p.s. WHat is 3D traffic??? Digital?

If you don't plan on driving in Europe that's not a bad deal, if you do then you need to add on £50 so would probably be cheaper to get one that included EU maps from the start.

I wouldn't worry about traffic, the 2508 comes with digital traffic.

That Argos double deal is a joke.

Why would you want a 4.3" travel kit with a 5" unit ?

Not the first time I've seen this sort of incompatible deal !

Two eBay deals fell thru shall I go NEW? Usually I do with things like this but am self employed and not working much until May......so am trying to save money.

Whats the pros and cons of new and recent second hand with satnavs and especially Garmins??
