I was walking from the Kinder Scout plateau in Derbyshire towards Jacob's Ladder the other day and all of a sudden I lost all satellite connection. I thought it was because I was descending into a valley but after 5 or so minutes (and lower down) about 9 of the satellites returned. My partner suggested that there might have been some magnetic interference in the area (underground water). This seems a very plausible explanation. Any other ideas as to what might have happened?

I'd be very surprised if that was the case, but then I've been surprised before Wink

I tend to favour your idea that as you descended into the valley your GPS's view of the satellites was blocked for that time. Do you know the exact grid where it happened?

I was up there the other week, and assuming the same route, had no problems.

The route we took was up Crowden Clough to the plateau. Then along the plateau via Pym Chair towards what is called Swine's back. Just before reaching here we descended towards Jacob's Ladder. The route is well marked so we didn't deviate. There seemed to be a lot of sky showing so I was quite surprised when my A10 lost all signals and only regained them at a lower point were even less of the sky was visible!

Ah well bang goes that theory then as you're right, nothing on that route should give you a problem. Maybe just a glitch in the software? If it ever happens again try the standard fix ... switch off then switch on again Wink

Afuss, I don't know how old your unit is but suggest it may be due for a service which will include re aligning and tuning the antena's I was up in the Black Moutains the other week, lost all my satelittes on the top and never did get them back! I was well overdue for a service and it is currently with them. Yours might be on the way out if you lost them for no reason.

Crikey, never knew you could have a GPS 'serviced' Confused

Never needed that with any of my Garmins and suspect it's not really necessary for satmaps. When you get any significant glitches the best thing a user can try is a hard, or master, reset. That tends to cure the vast majority of problems.

Just had my Satmap "serviced". All looks good to me. Had to dig the old Garmin 60CSx out while it was away but I reckon it needs a trip back to the manufacturers as well as not all the buttons functioning correctly. Pleased to see the Satmap back today with a decent size screen and OS maps, although there are some bits on the Garmin I prefer.
