Hi All,
I have just purchased the TT1005 World but want to know if I can transfer all my preferences/settings and POI's from my TT940?
It's just that I want to avoid the pain of setting it all up from scratch again, I use the speed zoned warnings across Europe and the UK and setting up each individual camera type is quite boring.
plus there are other settings which we all change I suspect which I would need to input again.
Any help would be greatly Appreciated,

I'm afraid I can't help with your question, but I'd be really interested in how you find the 1005 in comparison to the 940.

Jock,
I'm not the OP but have had a 1005 for 10 days or so having upgraded from a 550 and can provide some thoughts.
The 1005 has a bigger screen that's brighter with richer colours. The screen is also capacitive instead of resistive and is more accurate in use. Routing with the updated Navcore seems a bit better and HD traffic is quicker to initialise.
I have found some downsides. As reported the screen suffers from reflections especially in bright sunlight but it is always readable. The screen mount is good but it is no longer an active mount which means lots of charge cable plugging/unplugging. There is no compass or heading information available in the driving view anymore (miss those).
The 1005 uses MyTomTom instead of TomTom Home and you no longer have complete access to the files on the device. I have had no problems using MyTomTom though and have added pocketgpsworld's camera alerts successfully.

Are you sure you have to do that, mate?
I've got a Go1005/1015 and unless they've changed something the multiway power plug can stay clipped into the mount all the time and you just take the Go off it by pulling against the magnets in the mount.
I find it a bit "Heath Robinson" and messy-looking compared to the Go x40/x50 mount, but I've never had to manually plug the power cable in while in the car.
BTW... The other big difference for some people is the lack of ITINERARY PLANNING on the new models.

Hi Guys,
thanks for the replies, I have transferred some of the items, some failed on transfer for some reason.
Quick question when you guys update the PGPSW database I take it you have to disconnect the cable from the mount every time, unless you buy an additional cable to connect to your PC?
I didn't realise I would be losing Itinerary planning that is a real loss to me......

GO
Via
XL
Start
Classic
Are there any of the models that are covered by the Lifetime Maps offer that you would recommend as a replacement for an aging (the battery holds almost no charge) but otherwise fully functional 940?

Ah, thanks Andy. I just assumed that the cable only clipped to the GO and not to the mount. Knowing that it can stay clipped to the mount makes it much better. |

is the method the same to put the speed camera updates on the unit every week, I mean the PGPSW ones normally I use Windows Explorer and just copy and paste the required files into the map folder on my TT940.

No, the 1005 uses MyTomTom which does not give file and folder access to the unit. You need to use MyTomTom to install the PGPSW speed camera updates as Community POIs.

It looks like there's a new method for your new toy!
Andy, I think there's a typo here "10. Navigate to the folder in which you extracted the files downloaded in Step 3 above." should that read "10. Navigate to the folder in which you saved the files downloaded in Step 3 above."

"clipped" to the mount makes it sound firmer than it is! 
It's only held in by two little nibs on the edges of the hole in the mount and corresponding dents in the ends of the plug.
But I think it's actually designed to be a bit wobbly so that the little magnets can pull the plug up into the socket in exactly the right orientation. If it was too firmly fixed there would be a danger of mis-aligning it.

Yes, you can now add all the updates in one go without having to un-zip them into the separate files. You do need to download the special "zipfile" version though.

thanks very much for all your help, I had been holding off upgrading my TT940 but finally thought it was worth it for the lifetime map updates.

Basically, none of the NAV3 models (the ones that connect to MyTomTom) have itinerary planning.
After the streamlining, the idea as that Go models would be top of the range with Live Services, the Vias would be mid-range and the Starts basic.
But they immediately wrecked that by producing the Via Live models, the cut-down Go820, the Start 20 that was pretty indistinguishable from the Vias and a Start 60 with a bigger and better screen than any of the rest!
Why not stick with the Go940? (or sell it to me!)

The 940 does everything I need of it, and the failing battery is of little concern (will it eventually stop powering on, even when connected to power?). I know the battery can be replaced.
The lifetime maps offer seems like a good deal. Has this been introduced because these units aren't selling well? Are TT likely to stop producing map updates for older units?
Having been used to just dragging & dropping POI files to the unit, I think the myTomTom might take a bit of getting used to. At the moment I only extract the cam OV2s from the download (leaving the BMPs & MP3s that are already in place on the 940). As far as I can see, I'd have remove these, from the ZIP, if I didn't want the ones on the 940 overwritten. Something that I could do in a batch file, as I already use a batch file to rename the OV2s.
How does the system get backed up, if you can't just use Windows Explorer? At the moment, I like to keep an older version on the unit and a new version on the SD - in case of trouble, I can pull the SD and a "known good" system is available. Is that possible on the newer units?
