Police services in Oxford are only planning to adopt new measures to enforce 20mph speed limits on local roads despite the restrictions being introduced two years ago.

Whilst the introduction of the lower speed limits, which are intended to reduce road casualties, came into action a while ago, local police have failed to perform routine stops at the sites until now.

The police claimed their new approach would be more "proportionate and targeted" with the majority of those caught speeding issued warnings and advice at the roadside instead of facing prosecution.

This will reflect the nature of the offence, with the majority of speeders expected to exceed the limit by a fractional amount and therefore receive more lenient punishments.

Those caught flouting the speed restrictions in a more severe manner will face prosecution.

Some local residents previously expressed feelings of despondence towards the 20mph restrictions, claiming that the majority of drivers did not abide by the law. Lack of enforcement was thought to be primarily behind this, with poor police presence offering no incentive for drivers to keep their speed in check.

Meanwhile, Oxfordshire County Council seemed to remain fairly neutral on the matter, with Deputy Leader Rodney Rose commenting that "it will be interesting to see how this [the speed enforcement] works in practice."

So if they are 'fairly neutral on the matter' why the heck did they authorise something in which they are not enthusiastic in the first place?

Two councils involved, Oxford City Council and Oxford County Council. Perhaps they have differing priorities?

Maybe the council and the police should read the article in today's Sun stating that Contraversial 20mph speed limits designed to cut road casualties are not working, official figures show.

To quote Claire Armstronng
Quote:
"Road safety campaigner Claire Armstrong of Safe Speed called for a halt to lower zones.
She said: “A 20mph limit does not make the road safer. Thirty is absolutely adequate.”
And that's coming from someone who you would think would be all in favour of it. But will that make any difference to the idiots who don't believe what she does? Of course not; they will blindly carry on because it 'seems like a good idea'

The Police themselves don't stick to the 20mph limit, so I don't see how they can really enforce it on anyone else.

Looks like this is an Europe-wide initiative
Avon and Somerset are doing something similar.

"Speeding drivers in Avon and Somerset are being warned to slow down or face the consequences during a week-long campaign to make the roads safer.

"Police and Community Speed Watch volunteers are taking part in a Europe-wide co-ordinated speed enforcement operation from Monday August 20-26."
