Just bought a start 20 , it won't connect using tom-tom home
Had to download the new program to manage it problem is it
doesn't let you see the content nor does the start 20
Show as a removable drive ! Also backing up the device is not
Yet supported ,I was hoping to put the Pocket gps cameras
On but don't see how it's possible ? May be returning it ( to Tesco )
( I am using a Mac)

Welcome to the world of TomTom's latest anti-piracy drive.

Effectively TomTom are trying to control what you can and can't put onto your device. Any application updates are triggered by TomTom. I thought they'd already implemented the facility to add your own POIs though.

We have explained the new system at some length here. Newer units run teh latest OS NAV3 and it's an entirely new system that operates very differently. One of the main differences being you no longer have access to the device filesystem.

However, you can install POIs, it's done via the MyTomTom app in your toolbar as explained in our install guide:

Darren - for some reason, the extra full stop at the end of your link is causing my browser to go to a blank page.

Bob, if you have the same problem, try this link instead
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/uksafetycameras-tomtom-nav3.php

Also, that guide does not mention adding the PGPSW spoken warnings... In fact it says you cannot do it, when you now can!
(Darren, please see my post here!!

Bob... If you want to add the voice warnings as well, add the .ogg audio warnings to your download package and add them to the TomTom at the same time as you add the other files (in the "Add POI" section of MyTomTom)

Shout if you need more help.

It breaks because of that spurious full stop, now fixed.

Re. the updates to the instructions, I'll take a look. I was away when you posted that and so missed it.

Thanks for all the help, but just one more question how do you disconnect device[ start 20] from my tom tom properly, I can't find anything that says disconnect device on my tom tom, I know it could cause real problems not disconnecting properly when using tom tom home with earlier tom toms

Just unplug. There is no 'Eject' or similar and the new system doesn't (shouldn't) suffer from the ills of unplugging before ejecting as the old system did/does.

That link is to a private area of the web site reserved for moderators and staff so you wouldn't be able to access it.

We don't have a guide as yet for voice alerts, but the process is the same as for speed camera files, using the voice files instead.

The install guide for that is found on our Installation Guides page linked from the 'Speed Cameras' tab at the top of the site here.

Or

In lieu of the pending proper instructions, here's some notes I made in a previous reply

There are two ways to load sound files.
On the old models where you did it manually, you either put them into the map folder - the same place as you put the .ov2 and .bmp camera files.... or you put them in the "sounds" folder.
You then did the "Warn when near POI" set up for them all.
(This was all explained in more detail at the bottom of this instruction page from pre-MyTomTom days).

Now...The equivalent to this for the new models and MyTomTom, is to either:
1. add them in the "Add POIs" section or
2. add them in the "Add warning sounds" section.

and then do the "Warn when near set-up in the machine in exactly the same way as before.

If you do #1.... You add ALL the camera files (.ov2, .bmp and .ogg) in the "Add POI" section of MyTomTom.
They will then be selected automatically when you do the warnings setup, so this is probably the easiest way, but you have to remember about the slight "strangeness" when you are asked "Is this the sound you want to use" during the warning set-up (see those old instructions again!)

If you do #2.... You add the .ov2 and .bmp files in the "Add POI" section and the .ogg files to the "Add Warning sounds" section.
You can then select the warning voice files you want for each camera type from the normal sound effects selection screen, but you'll find the default names are hard to read because they are shortened on-screen.

The fact the names are truncated on that sound effects screen is a pain, but if you choose to do it this way there is no reason you cannot change the names of the sound files to something shorter before you upload them.

However, once the files are on the device, it all works just the same as it always did on the old models, so you can follow the same instructions for setting up the warnings on the device (that link again...the instruction page)

Hope that helps a bit in the meantime.

Andy
